Shamelessly stolen from the Guardian but I'm sure other places have done similar;
Match of the Tournament: Portugal 3 Spain 3. One of the best football games I've seen in a long time. I know Russia/Saudi Arabia was the first game and I know there were other games before this one but this was the first 'big' game, was the first one I had the chance to sit down and watch and it didn't disappoint. Spain probably played the best half hour of football seen in the entire tournament and Ronaldo put in the best individual performance.
Player of the Tournament: Kante flew under the radar a bit, and Hazard had a great tournament. Think it has to be Modric though, he was just always there for Croatia.
Goal of the Tournament: Pavard. Has to be Pavard. That angle from behind him as he strikes it is just unreal.
Highlight: Has to be England finally winning a penalty shoot-out. Even a pessimistic cynic like me was on the edge of my seat during it.
Biggest Disappointment; Germany. Pre-match form actually was a decent indicator. They were a shambles and I'm still not quite sure why.
Biggest Surprise; Russia. For all the talk of special diets and nutrition, you still need to go out and score and they far exceeded what was expected of them. And a tournament is always better when the hosts go on a run.
Best World Cup ever? It's up there. I think I probably prefer Brazil but that's purely on the back of the 7-1 and how surreal it was, the rest of the tournament probably wasn't a patch on this.

Brazil was amazing as well to be fair. The last two World Cups have probably been the best in my life time.

Ehh Brazil was alright, better than South Africa definitely. Group stages were good but it fell off a bit after, definitely think this was so much better for that.

Knock-out rounds in Brazil were mostly shite tbh.

South Africa was great for shithousing.
Suarez's handball to banter off an entire continent, Nigel de Jong straight up assaulting Xabi Alonso. Van Bronkhorst scoring a worldie to put Netherlands into the final in his last tournament, then getting himself booked and suspended for it. That Lampard goal. The whole France team just going full mutiny.
Love it

Every world cup is amazing. You don't have to rank them.

Match of the Tournament: Japan v Belgium. Some of the football on show was fantastic, great tactics, Belgium adapted but still needed a fluke header to get back into it. And that winner - fuckin hell. What a goal, just everything about it is fucking great. Contenders would be Spain v Portugal and France v Argentina.
Player of the Tournament: I think Modric is a deserving winner of the Golden Ball but I'm gonna go with Hazard because I thought he was instrumental for Belgium throughout and even when the whole team didn't really show against France, he was still demanding the ball and gliding past defenders trying to create chances. Only for Varane having such a great game I think Hazard would've conjured up an equaliser. He was incredible all tournament.
Goal of the Tournament: I loved Messi's v Nigeria but it has to be Pavard. Fuckin hell
Highlight: Just a personal one - Kroos v Sweden. We were at a mates birthday and we had all chipped in to get him a £100 bet on Germany to win the tournament (he's a ridiculous gambler). Sitting in his house watching the game and we're all shouting for the Germans, when that goal goes in we all went nuts convinced they were gonna kick on and win it. Obviously didn't work out lol but for that moment of all of us going mad, it was great.
Honourable mention to the Iranian throw-in and Batshuayi whacking the ball off the post.
Biggest Disappointment: James Rodriguez being injured in key games for Colombia. I think he would've made a huge difference to them and it's a pity to think what might have been.
Biggest Surprise: Trippier's performance over the tournament was excellent, I hadn't seen a lot of Spurs last year but just assumed they had downgraded when they sold Walker. But he was fantastic.
Best World Cup ever? All World Cups are great World Cups but yeah, this one was another level for me. So many fantastic moments in terms of great goals and great football as well as just madness and scrambles and VAR. It was all brilliant.
