Not enough music threads in here for my liking.
Subject to change (possibly in the next few weeks or so, depending on my mood):
1. Sigur Rós 2. Mastodon 3. Radiohead 4. Queens of the Stone Age 5. Pink Floyd
Those 5 could move around very easily and a few other bands could pop in there (The Dillinger Escape Plan, Tool, Placebo, Grizzly Bear) from time to time.

I really can't stand Sigur Ros. I've only listened to 2 and half songs (don't even know which ones) but they are so boring. I don't even dislike minimalist music as such but they just really bore me. Also doesn't help the three people I know who like them irl are the biggest hipsters of all time.
No particular order:
1) Radiohead 2) The Beatles 3) QOTSA 4) Rolling Stones 5) Nirvana
Very mainstream but I think they're known as some of the best because they are the best, there are loads of others I like (and more modern) but they all have such an amazing collection.
Beastie Boys and probably the Kooks are unlucky to miss out

have to back up @eric here, they're basically the epitome of 'beautiful' music. takk and brackets are literally modern masterpieces. watching them live was mind blowing.

1: Pink Floyd 2: The Beatles 3: Opeth 4: Radiohead 5: Tool
I only really started listening to Sigur Ros the other day. I'm not sure what to think of them yet, I get the impression that it's the kind of music that takes a while to get into.

They do take a while to get into for some people, worth your patience though.

1. Dream Theater 2. Ayreon 3. X Japan 4. NOFX 5. Millencolin
Man that was a hard decision. The top 3 have been the same for years now probably over 5 years but the bottom 2 could interchange with others depending on if it's my period or not.

Although the fact you've said 'very mainstream' makes me hope you didn't cut out after Kid A. Wouldn't say them or QOTSA are that mainstream personally. But Sigur Ros minimalist? I've only really listened to Agaetis Bryjun to comment, but I don't think that's minimalist. Maskya Yoshida will love you for saying The Kooks though the bender. 5? Arcade Fire, The Shins, Radiohead, LCD Soundsystem, Foals. It's hard leaving Arctic Monkeys out, but even though I love so many of their songs, they don't affect me in the same way as those bands I've mentioned.

The top 5s in here are quite mainstream but there's nothin really wrong with that. At least it's not all x factor winners and whatever else is on a fucking asda advert or somethin like that. Wouldn't say my picks were underground but definitely nowhere near the UK mainstream. I do love cheesy older mainstream stuff like blink and NFG.

1. Bring Me The Horizon 2. Parkway Drive 3. Behemoth 4. Arctic Monkeys 5. Every Time I Die
That was hard. I'd say only BMTH are in my all time top 5. The others depend on what mood I'm in.
