Where does everyone stand on this?
Personally, I can understand why players do it in some cases. If the club you've just scored against gave you your big chance in football and only sold you because a massive offer came in, then fair enough don't celebrate the first time you score against them, as a bit of respect to them for bringing you through. After the first game is done though, celebrate all you want, imo.
If you've been at a club for 2 seasons or something and been sold cos they didn't think you were good enough anymore, go mad, celebrate in front of their fans, act like a cunt.

What Adebayor did was alright tbf.
Nahhh, I don't mind if a player celebrates against his former club (or against us). But Ade took the absolute piss. As long as it's not in a disrespectful manner.

Nothing wrong with celebrating scoring against a former club and I find anyone who has a problem with it ridiculous tbh. Obviously doing what Adebayor did and running the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the Arsenal fans is taking it to a completely different level and is inciting the fans but as far as I'm concerned there is nothing wrong with celebrating with your team mates.

This is one of those things in football that pisses me off, players should celebrate when they score especially when like Stu says the player has been at the club for only a season or two or has been sub/deemed not good enough.

I honestly don't care. Let people do what they want.

The fact people can decide that you can't celebrate scoring a goal is ridiculous.
I'd be more pissed off that I've just conceded than the bloke being happy about it.

I'm not a fan of players refusing to celebrate when they score against their old clubs, but rubbing it in and taking the piss is the other end of the scale.

Dont see why people get so arsey about it, especially if its a more obscure player who used to play for you
Bitterness and moaning for the sake of moaning in most cases, people trying too hard to look like they're a tubthumping fanatic of whatever team they support in most others, get a grip i say

I don't see the problem. If you score a goal then your gut reaction is to celebrate. Your job is to do well and play football for the team you play for now and if you're doing well and the team is doing well then I don't blame the player for wanting to celebrate. The RVP goal vs arsenal for example seemed to rile people up but lets face it United were going through a bad patch and it was a big goal for both him and the team.
Not to mention cunts like Piers Morgan constantly calling him VAN PURSESTRINGS and singing about rape then moaning about him celebrating against them. Why should he think highly of you if the second he left you abused him. Every right to be happy about scoring against you.

I agree disenchanted.
The RVP celebration didn't really annoy me that much like the Adebayor one did.
Likewise, I don't think Ramsey needed to be so respectful to Cardiff. They were important goals for us. He deserves the right to at least crack a smile and give someone a high five or something.

Celebrating scoring a big goal in a big match, the natural reaction is relief and joy. If you score a consolation goal in a League Cup loss, it's much easier not to celebrate. Every goal has different circumstances. I think that only proper club legends should refrain from celebrating. Van Persie was just short of being one, plus he hasn't been treated well by Arsenal since the move so it's not as if you owe anything to people that are constantly giving you abuse.

Tbf in the RVP case he entirely deserves (nearly) everything chanted his way given the way he left.
Don't really care if people celebrate against us or not, it's moreso 'how' they celebrate. When Eduardo came back and scored against us in the CL a few years back the entire stadium cheered. Easy enough given the game scenario (think we were out of sight by then) but it also depends what the present relationship is like between the fans and the player.

Anelka scored against us countless times and I can't ever remember a time people made a big deal over his celebration - I'm sure he did celebrate though

He is entitled to not give respect back then though. Some fans seem to expect him to be this great diplomat even though the departure was very bitter.

Indeed, I was merely saying that it works both ways. Those fans who expect him not to celebrate will (hopefully) not be the ones who chant abuse at him.
