So after the Aussies whinge about sledging going too far when the Saffers give them some back, and then crying about the crowd giving them some back, and then moaning about Rabada being too forthright in his send off to a dismissed batter, they now get caught red handed ball tampering, try to hide it as a team, then have to come out and admit that the entire team and management knew about it.
When the umpires pulled him up on it he even turned his pockets out and blagged that he'd done nothing. It's only once they've come off and realised the media have seen all of it that they've had to own up and appear contrite. Heavy bans coming, surely?

The way Smith was talking it’s like he’s still going to be captain but a resignation is the very least you’d expect surely?

Historically the penalty isn’t that strict, weirdly. Think Nasser Hussain said on sky sports the current rules have it down as 4 demerit points and a one or two game ban, wonder whether owning up to it will hurt them though as they admitted to it being highly pre-planned which looks even worse

Although for clarity, it's only for this test match they're standing down.
Love that the South African media have a swing-o-meter broken down into small segments and have highlighted when they started tampering the ball after lunch, how the ball swung a lot more, and then stopped when the big screen showed them tampering with it.

It'll definitely be more prevalent than we know, but that blatant at this level? I'm not sure. No surprise someone like Warner would sign off on that but I thought Smith would be so much better than that. I don't know enough about it to know just how much of an effect it has but calling for lifetime bans is way too strong, no? Like this tweet seems massively over the top.

1 match ban for Smith plus his entire match fee. 75% fee for Bancroft and 3 demerit points, whatever they are
seems a bit of a shite punishment for something so big

Warner was quoted as saying they'd never do it and anybody that did would need to take a long hard look at themselves just last year lol.

Cricket Australia making a good decision in their year long bans for Smith and Warner, 9 months for Bancroft. They've put the authorities to shame with their ridiculous 1 game ban.

Still a shambles though, Bancroft apparently part of the leadership group after 7 tests, Lehman apparently had no idea (so the walkie talkie chat was co-incidence) and Starc apparently had no idea the ball was being prepared to help him swing it.
The latter one is believable. The other two, nah.

Oh yeah it was definitely more widespread than they've let on, Smith and Warner have been the main fall guys for sure. No idea how Lehman has walked away free, if anything he should be sacked for letting that shit happen under his nose without knowing about it!

Honestly know fuck all about cricket and haven't seen a video. Can someone explain in what way he was tampering with the ball and what advantage was to be gained from it?

He used sandpaper to graze the surface of the ball. When it's bowled it means the air flow changes around the ball, and whereas the batter expects it to deviate slightly one way based on where the shiny side is facing, it actually deviates the other.
Players try and do this legally by polishing one side of the ball, and chucking the other side onto the pitch when returning it (also "accidentally" standing on it).
