Alright, most of you have probably already seen my post in the GD but I've recently been thinking about starting something like this, thought of doing it with friends but knew that probably wouldn't last, then thought about all the people on here and the wealth of knowledge we have (don't make me regret that sentence). Plus most of us have shit degrees we need to validate somehow (I'm particularly looking forward to Maskya Yoshida's piece on the psychology of football). Anyway nothing is set in stone yet, this is just generally sounding out people, what they could contribute (looking for consistency here), things like where we could have it, the name etc. I mean we don't even have to limit ourselves to football in all honesty, just as long as there'd be regular contributions from elsewhere. Like the rest of the forum it should be a very democratic thing, but we want to keep the quality high at the same time obviously. Plus with the World Cup coming up I'm thinking this would be a good time to start this. Discuss anyway. Link: soccernerdcentral.wordpress.com/

First thing I'd ask is what do we want to get out of it? Just somewhere to put up opinion pieces and have it look pretty rather than in a forum post? Like are we gonna have a twitter account for the blog and try and gain followers or is it an internal thing, just for ourselves and whoever stumbles upon it?
Anyway, depending on the WC Sweepstake write-ups I think that's as good a place to start as any.

Might be worth contacting one of the graphic computing nerdz as well if you want it to look professional.

Like are we gonna have a twitter account for the blog and try and gain followers or is it an internal thing, just for ourselves and whoever stumbles upon it? Anyway, depending on the WC Sweepstake write-ups I think that's as good a place to start as any. Definitely have a twitter account, easiest way to pick up readers and followers, can't see any reason not to. Personally I was hoping for mainly opinion pieces, too many of these things start doing match reports and the like, and you're just kidding yourself thinking anyone would read a match report on a blog over a major news outlet. Unless you can go in depth tactically or offer something new there's very little point in things like that. Also was hoping we could treat it with an air of irreverence which we seem good at over here, I read far too many things by bloggers and students (students are awful for this) where they take themselves far too seriously, write in cliches and although it might be a perfectly well-written piece, just offers nothing new and is basically a bit boring, sometimes even cringing a bit at what they're writing. Like ones that pretend they're bit-time when they clearly aren't just annoy me. Podcasts like the Football Ramble or Football Weekly, or the stuff that Harry Pearson used to write for the Guardian, they make excellent points while still having an air of entertainment about it, if that makes sense? Can be difficult to pull off, often it means being funny in writing but obviously it doesn't have to be, just as long as it's interesting. Basically I'm not a fan of amateurs trying to pass themselves off as journalists (not a massive fan of journalists either to be honest), because often it's painfully obvious in writing and doesn't come across well at all. And yeah I was thinking the best of the World Cup sweepstakes could be used.

Does anyone have any ideas for a name? Soccer Nerd Central isn't the worst (I bet it's free on twitter for starters) but we can do better.

If its going to be a collaborative effort with several people chipping in I think something like soccer nerds is fine. Or some sort of football cliche or saying, like BoxToBox, OnTheOverlap, OnTheVolley, DivingHeader, OffsideTrap...
Actually those who are all fucking dreadful.
I really think you should have a core team of writers. 5/6 people. Then people can chip in with guest posts every so often. It's harsh but elect a judging panel, then some sort of audition where people submit a pilot article and then the best people get full time spots. It can be expanded if someone contributes frequently and is good enough. But letting everyone do a bit makes it a bit of a hash imo.

Either that or you hold a forum vote on anonymously submitted pieces so you dont base it solely off what 3/4 'judges' like. And there's no accusation of bias.

Imagine Adrian Durhum but without the blatant trolling and writing stuff he doesn't really believe. Strong, 'out there' opinion pieces but with solid foundation and logic behind it. That's me basically. Imagine Adrian Durham if all he ever talked about was Chelsea and he was deluded enough to believe what he says instead of doing it for phone calls.

There needs to be an X Factor judge.
I can do the Simon Cowell role; no qualifications to criticise but will do so harshly regardless.
