Rory Gallagher new Donegal manager. No surprise, big shoes to fill but he was the natural choice other than maybe Gary McDaid (who didn't seem to put himself forward) or Declan Bonner (who wanted to carry on with the minors). If oeople thought Jim was defensive or volatile in terms of dealing with the media they're in for a treat with this fella. Everyone expects a drop off now and with our draw in Ulster it's very difficult to see us retaining, but a solid league (stay in Div 1) and making it the All-Ireland quarters would be a very successful start to his tenure imo. As I mentioned, Bonner is with the minors again which I'm delighted with and also Maxi Curran has the U-21s again. Is O'Rourke still Monaghan manager Mycon?

That's interesting, didn't know it was made by Aussies. Makes a lot of sense. Surprised that it even got off the ground. Absolutely abysmal game though but you could tell it was so low budget.
Was just thinking that Hurling would probably work best on Nintendo in the style of a super speed 2d Mario game, that would be the best engine for capturing the speed and back-and-forth of the game.

Monaghan beat All-Ireland champions away in the league. Scenes I think you call it.

We've had a decent league, letting in 4 goals isn't ideal but overall I'd say Rory's quite happy - avoided relegation and league semi. Team looks fresher than last year, MacNiallis is turning into a seriously classy player and McBrearty has been unplayable since the turn of the year.
Obviously Ulster will be difficult to win, as always, but especially so this year with the route to the final. Still, encouraging signs all round.

Thought they played well despite the result, Cork were just really clinical.
Monaghan were really good today, went to see them to lose by 13 points embarrassingly last week but only lost by a point this week to Dublin at Croke Park which is really encouraging. Us and Donegal look like the best two teams in Ulster but a first round game away to Cavan is a bit of a nightmare draw, can see them losing their discipline in a local derby.

www.the42.ie/jim-gavin-dublin-blanket-defence-2063366-Apr2015/I'd say his comments are geared towards the slight backlash against Dublin having 14 men within their own 45 but the general point is right, calling these systems "blanket defence" and "puke football" and pinning the blame on Ulster teams is simplistic and counter-productive. I dunno about you Mycon but as a Donegal fan I'm not bothered about the wider perception of how we play the game but the hysterical "death of Gaelic football" articles get to me a wee bit. Sean Cavanagh had surgery a couple days ago but will apparently be fine for May 17th according to the Tyrone county board. It's amazing to see their U21s in the All-Ireland final as well, fair play to them. Heartbreak for the Donegal lads for the 3rd year in a row losing in the Ulster final to a last minute score. Starting to get excited for the start of the Championship, though I'd be amazed if we navigate our way through Ulster again. Incredibly tough draw this year

I think there's defensive football that still engages with the game, like Tyrone at their peak could sit back and play the so-called blanket defence yet still score 2-14 or 2-15. Then there's the kind of stuff Derry got up to this year or Donegal got up to in the All-Ireland semi-final against Dublin a few years ago which is sort of taking the piss defensive. To be fair to Donegal, they were slightly more expansive the following season and I think that's the reason that they won the Championship, they were a good counter attacking team rather than an ultra defensive team.
He's right that it has become lazy to call everything a blanket defence, Monaghan conceded 1-22 against Dublin in the league and some of the pundits were saying 'Dublin breached the blanket defence'. No they didn't, if there was a true blanket defence then you definitely wouldn't have seen that sort of score. In fact, Monaghan weren't defensive enough in that game and learnt their lesson for the next game when they only lost to Dublin by a point. It's a given these days that every Ulster team plays the same tactics apparently.
Ulster will be really tough this year with 8 teams in the top 3 divisions, we have a tough start against Cavan away, hard to call that one.

That's the thing though Davey, Derry are lambasted for what they did in the league game but this time last year they were getting beat by 18 points in the league final against Dublin. It's not pretty but it's about building a belief that you can compete. I think Brian McIver and the squad will have gone away from that 4 point loss feeling a lot better than they did this time last year even though they technically "achieved" more last year. "Death of the game" and all this hyperbole, and then on the other hand complaining that football is becoming like hurling with only a few teams realistically going to win Sam - well how do you counter that? How do you make yourselves competitive and maybe win some silverware?
Just think it's hysteria, not helped by the likes of Spillane and Brolly absolutely loves waxing lyrical about the death of the game.

Fair enough but I feel in that case, they went a little too far with it. 'Death of the game' for one league game though is definitely over the top.
The worst one that I read was Bernard Flynn who said that the league had shown the standards of football were not up to standard. Whatever about the tactics, what do you expect from an amateur game? Anytime I've watched a game from the 80s, the standard looks worse to me, it certainly wasn't this utopia that these pundits seem to think it is.

Did you see the League final Mycon? I'd rather watch Derry drag the game down to a shite level but still be competitive tbh.
