Our government has happily called similar situations in other countries genocide so I've no great inclination to not call it one. The vast majority of Irish historians don’t call it a genocide (I don’t actually know of any that do call it that) so I’d lean towards that rather than use it to point score against your own government. There was no systematic policy with the aim of wiping out swathes of the population. Incredible mismanagement and neglicence but no pre-planned slaughter. So no, it wasn’t genocide.

Just to clarify I was saying "wow" at the fact that Churchill was called the greatest Briton to ever have lived. Mind you, coming from Jeremy Hunt I shouldn't be surprised.
Churchill gets remembered for his "we will fight them on the beaches" speech and all of a sudden gingoism takes over.

I saw someone defend him by saying that the views he had were widely held by people at the time. So were Hitler’s views held by Germans. It’s how he became chancellor. What a stupid argument. Any idea who was running the Ireland account that week notpropaganda? I like them.

When Ian Blackford stood up at PMQ's today a Tory MP shouted "Wrong country" before Ian had even started speaking. The speaker then had to intervene twice to allow him to be heard.
It's as if they think we don't have TVs up here. Something beyond even indyref2 is brewing here.

I think what you’re all forgetting is that Churchill saved Europe and that makes everything else all right.

Searing hot take from this eejit. We're reserving "white supremacist" and "mass murderer" to Hitler now folks The follow up tweet is arguably worse: It's self-victimisation at it's worst that every time someone describes a problem that happened to non-Jewish people that it's anti-semitic because you aren't falling over yourself to mention how the Holocaust is worse. Also, as we're on the topic of Churchill in terms of the Irish famine most of the historians that describe it as genocide largely come from Indian writers comparing to the larger context with the Bengal famine and other famines that occurred within the empire due to a belief of British/English supremacy, and that deliberately removing food from non British peasants to further British causes abroad was a deliberate act that had the added benefit of quashing any attempts at uprisings. It's not as clear cut as as an ideological hatred of Armenians or Jews, but relies on a mix of an ideological application of capitalism and the ideology of British supremacy. Tbf, outside of James Connolly I haven't done a huge amount of reading in terms of Irish writings, and Connolly wasn't even technically Irish.
