So I'm getting the option to work from home for two days a week soon. This is obviously to mask the fact we've not been given a pay rise to match inflation in about 100 years. Welcome to the future I work in Dublin 1 week a month and spend the rest of time at home, it's fantastic. Decent toilet roll is probably the best part For any future unemployed people, UK Power Networks in London have the cheapest shittiest one-ply paper ever. Brown bishops all round

Anyone work/worked with the civil service before? Applying for a role within HMRC (I know I’m sorry but also money) and you need to pass tests to reach the interview stage. Numerical and verbal tests I’ve passed easily but there’s a judgement test that for the life of me I can’t do, even failing the practice tests. It’s a three section test, the first two I do easily and then the third part ruins me every time.

You’re clearly too much of a wildcard for that environment.

I'm sure Maskya Yoshida knows HMRC. I vaguely remember having to do similar but can't recall anything in particular about it. Is it being run by capita by chance? Because they've set such a high bar for us in previous campaigns we've hardly had anybody get through to interview stage.

Don't you have a degree? Surely above a civil service job
Incidentially as someone who doesn't have a degree I'm thinking of packing in my job and grabbing a civil service job. Working rostered work including weekend and some weeks of nights is soul destroying but I'd be nearly halving my wages

Entry level salaries are usually good - it's the lack of progression that bites.

Seems chaotic trying to get a professional job. I honestly think everyone I went to Uni with have been forced back into the Masters/PhD route or are working in supermarkets or pubs while they wait for their chance at a job in their field, save for the bafflingly wealthy Oxbridge rejects who are in city positions through family/family friends.
If I ever have kids, they're 100% learning a trade

Work sending me to Mallorca next week till the end of August and I've done zero prep and have nothing booked.
If you're out there don't go falling off balconies or getting arrested so I can have an easy time of it, ta.

Can't wait to have a pint later Is that a career switch or were you already working in accounting? I'm considering a career switch because there's nearly no chance of any career progression in with my current organisation and the pay is shit. One of the things I've been looking at is accounting but not sure what the best route into it is with no direct experience or qualifications related to it.

One of the things I've been looking at is accounting but not sure what the best route into it is with no direct experience or qualifications related to it. I got into an entry level role in Canada with nothing but customer service experience doing credit control and accounts payable mostly. When I came home then I was getting similar roles but the salary is a bit shit them so I’ve been studying in the evenings the past 2 years for an accounting technician diploma. Recently qualified and think the qualification coupled with experience just opened up a lot more options. Accounting technician is a good way in I think, gives you really good skills and you would get to a bookkeeper/main finance person level for smaller companies anyway. Not sure how flexible the study is in GB but I could do it 2 nights a week for 2 years here. www.aat.org.uk/
