Syria is also a former colony of France. Long history there between the two countries.
France have been the most active European country against ISIS I think. Read that they have said France are their number 1 enemy, even moreso than the US. Over 1,000 strikes.
Paris has problems of unemployment and poverty, especially in the "banlieues". The attack on Charlie Hebdo was by French nationals, I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few French nationals involved with this as well. No hope for the future increases the chances of being indoctrinated into religious propaganda.
It also has a troubled history with Muslim immigrants going back quite a while.

It is the worst since Madrid though from a Westerner's perspective. Not in terms of the death toll maybe, but in terms of the repercussions of the event. Nothing he's said seems particularly ignorant to me, and frankly everyone responds differently to things like this anyway. Naivety is ignorance of world events, just because his view is different to yours doesn't make it naive. Just because his view is different, doesnt make it wrong. Nothing he has said is "wrong". It is however, to me, naive. I never said anything about ignorant, so I'll leave that. That thing about biggest human destruction since WW2 aswell, I mean, honestly Kosovo? Bosnia? The Troubles? Naive.

What is wrong with what he said? He's just come across as somebody who doesnt know that there is a war going on and saying things like "this is the worst since Madrid" (yeah, it aint word for word) is just awful to me and very, very naive. Well in europe it is... Comparing this to the likes of Kosovo is just as naive. Yeah there's a war going on but France are politically in peace time. As are Britain. Reading far too much into my thoughts by saying 'just because it's not at your front door'. I lived about 200 miles from North Africa earlier this year and yet I wasn't in a war zone. Of course it's comparable to the likes of Madrid. Bombs in a major European city causing the death of 100+ people. It's not an army doing this, just a group of people associating themselves to a group, same as Madrid.

They want to be identified, they want to be known for doing it, that's part of dying a martyr I thought.
Plus it matches their intention of generating more hatred.

The sad thing is that people are using this to promote their political/racial agenda.

It's not an army doing this, just a group of people associating themselves to a group, same as Madrid. I didnt actually compare it to Kosovo I pointed out that the point you made about mass human destruction since WW2 is just wrong. Oh, and in the likes of Kosovo and Bosnia there were a hell of a lot of civillian casualties so comparing scenarios isnt as wrong as you'd think. Now, politically France are in peace time? Why do they have military involvement in Syria then? That's a war. UK are there too. Any time you have troops on the ground it's not peace time. Also, when the opposing force, IS, has declared a war, then you are at war. When the IRA were detonating bombs in Britain, that was during a war. Now, yes, it is comparable to Madrid, but there was just no need to bring it up. Not an army? An army is generally considered as a group of armed forces under command. Of course it's an army. What, because it's only small groups it's not? Navy Seals, Marines, SAS..... small groups of a larger organisation. But yeah, naive and bewildered.

To be pedantic there's no French nor British troops on the ground in Syria, but let's ignore the facts.
It's just utterly needless to call him out, or rather, ask "what's wrong with you", over something so utterly trivial.

I suppose I should have said bombs on the ground, or jets in the sky. Whichever suits.
