With just a week to go until the Olympic games starts I thought I'd start a thread for Olympics discussion.
Opening Ceremony Friday 5th August, although the football starts a couple of days earlier.
Who off the field issues dominate the games? Drugs, bad conditions, security concerns...
Will GB be able to compete with their amazing London 2012 medal haul?
Who are the big names we'll be watching out for?
Random sports that we've not watched in 4 years but can't wait to watch again?
Dunno about anyone else but I LOVE the Summer Olympics. Throw myself into pretty much every sport and watch all of it.
Mens 100m Round 1 - Saturday 13th 16:00 - 16:43 Semis - Monday 15th 01:00 - 01:15 Final - Monday 16th 02:25 - 02:26

As an aside, cos I'm a big enough lists nerd I just spent about an hour going through the painstaking process of predicting which countries will medal each event (using betting sites as a rough guide plus my own first hand knowledge in the events I'm familiar with) Will be interested to pit my final table against the actual medals table. My top 10 has come out fairly similar to Infostrada's (who are kinda like the leading name in analyzing Olympic predictions pre-tournament). I'm a little more down on Russia - although more athletes may have been banned since Infostrada last updated their medals total (July 6th) Infostrada's Top 10: vs My Top 10: (fwiw I have hosts Brazil in 11th)

Typical negativity about a lesser nation's capacity to host an event will all be forgotten after a while. Happened with Rio for the World Cup and before then South Africa for the World Cup and Beijing 2008 too.
Really looking forward to their opening ceremony.
I'd be surprised if GB come close to their medal haul tbh, from what I gather the cycling team is a lot weaker than previously, as is the rowing, and if you then take away the home boost I think we'll be some way off. I reckon we'll get considerably less golds (and Jess will lose to Thiessen-Eaton and maybe even KJT) but maybe more lesser medals, a lot of athletes like Asher-Smith, Gemili, or all the relay teams, have an outside shot.
As me and Orion agreed the other day, Gatlin beats Bolt this time round. Reckon that Bromell lad from the US runs a 9.7 for a medal too.
Absolutely gutted there's no Olympics game, London 2012 was amazing fun with mates or online.

Also, rofl at athletes facing punishments if any un-approved sponsors tweet phrases such as "Olympics" "Rio" "2016" in relation to an athlete competing

I'm supporting KJT and no-one else. Over the entire two weeks.

All about that milf Jess for me. Plus she doesn't have a horrible Scouse scrawl of an accent.
Her and Gemili are the two Brits I'll make sure I'm around to watch.

Hopefully a couple golds in boxing for ourselves, Conlon anyway is heavy favourite for it from what I gather.

Just realised most of the finals are at 2 in the morning. Think I'm gonna have to train myself to take two sessions of sleep either side.

I think my GB medal haul is overly optimistic. Lot of them are outside shouts. I also tried to take into account that some of the betting odds would be favourable to home nations so I downgraded some even based on the betting. I gave us golds in: Mo Farah x2 Jess Ennis/KJT (I had one getting gold, one getting bronze - not arsed which way it pans out) Joe Joyce (boxing) Nicola Adams Chris Froome x2 Jason Kenny Team Pursuit (Mens) Laura Trott Lizzie Armistead Dressage Event Justin Rose Pommel Horse (Whitlock or Smith) Modern Pentathlon Coxless Fours Womens Coxless Pairs Men's Finn Women's 470 Women's RS:X James Guy or Adam Peaty (100m breaststroke) Murray Brothers (Mens Doubles) Triathlon (One of the Brownlee's)

Think most of those are fair. Froome twice though? Not seen the course but I reckon the road race will fancy a sprinter more.

Yeah that was one of the more optimistic ones. I think he's about 4th/5th favourite on betting.
Murray could get another in Singles - plus Murray/Konta or Murray/Watson could be in contention.
I love some of the doubles teams. Shame Federer's injured, Federer/Wawrinka would've been cool, Murray brothers, Rafa and Marc Lopez, Novak teaming with 40yr old doubles specialist Zimonjic, Tsonga & Monfils.

Murray tripling up then? Awesome, I'd fancy him to medal in all of them tbh.
Started editing the first post with key events times and the like but got to head out now so will carry on later.
