Why are African teams so shit? Saw the point made online that loads of their youngsters get poached early so become a commodity. The expectation from European clubs is they’ll get brought in for physicality/pace (i.e. brawn) rather than technique and game reading (i.e. brains) so those are the attributes that are actively encouraged at youth level (self-fulfilling prophecy). That’s why you don’t get your Abedi Pelés or Jay-Jay Okochas anymore.

The thing is, I thought that Senegal was tactically very strong in all three matches. Unlike a lot of other African squads they were strong in the back, super organized, and played to their strengths in every match and only missed out because of a bad bounce and a set piece. I think that a lot of that comes down to the fact that their FA isn't shit and that they have a very talented manager who isn't a mercenary.
Now the rest of the African federations break down into a few camps. You have the Maghreb sides who are completely tactically stagnant with the occasional exception of a marauding Morocco who never has a striker. They play the most conservative football but can sometimes squeeze out of the groups by sheer graft.
Almost every sub Saharan side is plagued by a combination of federation corruption, losing a lot of their best players to European sides, and the capricious and insane nature of African qualifying. It really takes a golden generation combined with stability to qualify for multiple tournaments and, quite honestly, the math just isn't with you there.
