yeah semi and 1/4 final is a massive gap, despite only being 1 game
any team could get to a 1/4 final by fluking their group and another game in the next round, getting to the final 4 means you're right up there and have to have your shit together
i think we'll win it anyway

England haven’t made a semi in an international tournament in 28 years. That in itself would justify the reaction imo. Kinda funny that Wales managed it two years ago in hindsightt.
Don’t think they’ll get close this time round, though.

Should there be such a gap though?
Like, we could beat anybody in the tournament in a one off game, so if we do that in the quarters should it be such a huge thing?
It is, I agree, but then should we not value the quarters more as a result?

Am I right in thinking England could get to the quarter finals by beating Tunisia and Panama, and then one of Poland, Colombia, Senegal or Japan?
You can’t judge a tournament by the final outcome. The above scenario, should England then get beat in the quarters would be nothing to celebrate on paper. They have to be judged on how they perform imo.
I think I’ve made a mess of the point I was trying to make, but hopefully you get it...

Yeah, and then it's likely to be Brazil or Germany who in a one off game it wouldn't be a major shock for us to beat.
The quality obviously massively steps up in the quarters though but if you're lucky you can still get some dross teams and find yourself in the semi's.

Don’t think they’ll get close this time round, though. They made the semi-finals of Euro 96. Having said that, the Euros is not on the same level as the World Cup, not only does the WC have much greater worldwide prestige, but you've got to beat the same European teams, as well as Brazil, Argentina and the best of the rest South American teams. I think if England beat Poland to reach the quarters, you should be delighted because you've actually lost to that level of team quite often in tournaments of the last 10 years. And you also have to beat everyone in normal time, because you are completely hopeless at penalties. You have only beaten Ecuador and Denmark in the knockout stages of an international tournament in the past 20 years. So beating Poland/Colombia should actually be celebrated.

Was just about to post what Mycon said about beating the likes of Poland or Colombia. That'd be a great achievement and a statement for this new England team that they actually belong at the quarter final stage automatically tbh. We always used to just say "England should get to the quarters minimum" but lately that hasn't been the case, can't just swot it aside because Poland isn't a glamourous enough country for you.

Really looking forward to watching the games! It's great how Russia v Saudi Arabia can suddenly become interesting.

Annoyingly I'm missing the first game which even though on paper looks like it'll be dreadful, opening games are always end up brilliant.
I think I'm proper excited for Spain Portugal when I get home from work tomorrow and then can't wait for Saturday.

I wasn’t keen at first, but he’s famous, I can’t turn I down.
If he dare says Craig David all over your *boing* at any point I’ll have to leave.

Is it just me that sense a massive gulf in the difference between England making the quarters and England making the semis? Get to the quarters and it feels like we've done alright. Yet if we get to the semi's (which is feasible, we could do it without even having to beat a big team if results go one way) it feels like everyone would lose their shit. If we get to the quarters we’ll have beaten everyone you’d reasonably expect us to beat. If we get to the semis we’ll probably have beaten Germany or Brazil. Don’t think it’s just us though, when you get to the semis you start dreaming of winning it.
