Has anyone ever done their family tree / used ancestry.com? My dad did it recently, got as far back as the early 1800s I think he said.

I did the DNA ethnicity estimate thingy. Was it worth it? My cousin has recently done it herself. My Mum’s Dad was a sailor....and it turns out my mum has another sister in Canada now 😂 I’ve had a quick look and more interested in my dad’s side, as I know nothing past grandparents, but there seems to be big holes in records so not very easy.

Always been interested to do it as I know next to nothing about my dad's side of the family. A second cousin on my mum's side is well into this sort of thing so a lot is known about that side. Always been put off by the thought of sending my DNA into a private company's database though.

This is mine. This has been updated several times since I first did it, with new estimates as technology advances, more data becomes more available etc. I think when I first did it a few years ago I was like 70% English lol. It's also matched my DNA with several other Ancestry users and estimates they're my third or fourth cousins. Was it worth it? Depends how much you value £70 l guess, I personally don't regret doing it and it'll only get more accurate. I don't have to pay any more money for the DNA stuff. Never really got into the family tree side of things to be honest.

I must say I've got absolutely no fucking idea where Norway and Sweden have come from, I can only think of Vikings. 😂 Sweden has been there from the start and I assumed it would go away or go down as it hit more accurate but it's remained.
Southern Italy makes sense because my nan on my dad's side was Italian, born in Naples.
Scotland and Ireland are expected I guess!

Unless you are unsure about the background of your family/history, £70 seems a lot to be told you're predominantly from the British Isles and Scandinavia.
As a white northerner that's pretty obvious.

Then again my mother did one half of her family tree and after four generations all she found was that the family had come from Derbyshire.
Hardly exotic.

I feel pretty lucky that I can trace both sides of my family back really far. Mum’s side has lived on the same plot of land since the famine at least, Dad’s moved around a little, I don’t know as much about my grandfather on Dad’s side but I don’t think I have any non-Donegal roots
I also know my cousins pretty extensively, people always find it weird when I say I’m really close with some of my third cousins
Unless you went back hundreds of years obviously but I’m not so interested in finding out whether I’ve Viking or anything in me.

Ignorance is bliss as far as I'm concerned, I'd hate to find some sort of link to a shithole like England

Looking at the replies on Twitter to the news Meghan had a miscarriage, it's understandable why you wouldn't want to be associated with the English.

My dad has done a lot of family history digging recently and found we are related to Admiral Nelson, and not too distantly either.

Been so many conflicting stories about his recent health of late.
There's a stunning series on Netflix that follows his time as manager of a Mexican side - and the recent full-length film that follows his time in Naples is amazing too.
