Genuinely surprised how many pundits are speaking out in his defence talking about the work he'd done - am I missing something.

He did get them top 4 last season with no money and losing Hazard, then into knockout stages this season. He was hardly a complete flop.

Genuinely surprised how many pundits are speaking out in his defence talking about the work he'd done - am I missing something. I think between the transfer ban but also his own ideas he gave a lot of young players chances and exposure at this level which is more than can be said for any Chelsea manager for a long, long time. Mount, Abraham, James, Tomori (even though he fell out of favour this year), Hudson-Odoi and Gilmour are all players that got significant minutes and played big parts of last season and this. Even if only one or two of those stay with Chelsea as long term starters that's a big benefit. He also had Pulisic playing at a really top level last season, unfortunately he hasn't looked anywhere near as sharp since his injury but the way he was playing last year had me excited like watching a young Hazard again. People will put that down to the player being class but the manager deserves credit for when they play well as much as when they play poorly. I think he has to be given credit for that and for the team getting top 4 last year. Also got Chelsea top of their CL group for the first time in I can't remember how long. It's gone horribly wrong very very quickly and I think the nature of the players seemingly completely giving up means he'll get a lot of stick, but you can't write off the work and his achievements.

They had Pulisic though so the transfer ban isn't exactly something he should be praised for negotiating. Likewise how much of the youth being played was enforced? Both fair points though (yours and IG), easy to forget they improved last year under him.

I’m not saying he was great, but he did well last season considering it was his first year in the Prem as well.
I think his sacking might be a bit early, especially with how open the league is this season. He doesn’t have much grounds to argue though cos Chelsea have been shit for a couple of months. Him of all people knows how ruthless Abramovich is when it comes to managers as well.

Both fair points though (yours and IG), easy to forget they improved last year under him. Pulisic is a kid and Hazard is one of the best to ever play for Chelsea. It was a big signing but it was hardly a like for like replacement. It's easy to think now that the Pulisic signing was great and a guaranteed success but he was 20 when he arrived in the summer of 2019. Look at Havertz so far, there's no guarantee they'll slot in and be great. When you look at how he's handled big signings this year, I think it's safe to say he likes using the youth players. Personally think it's a bit unfair to criticise him on hypotheticals from last season (would he have played youth players if the transfer ban wasn't there for eg) rather than just acknowledging the very good work that is there to see, in spite of how shite it's been the past couple months.

If we want to talk positives from Lampard's reign then it is more than fair to point towards the first team players who wouldn't have been anywhere close to a look in under any other manager from abroad.
Let's say Sarri never left I know in my heart of hearts that James, Tomori, Mount, Gilmour and Abraham would have never seen the first team and would currently be on loan in the championship or elsewhere.
Lampard has overseen the development of James, Mount and Abraham from championship players to established premier league players and now England internationals. That would have happened transfer ban or not. It's in Lampard's core beliefs as well as Morris and Edwards (Lampard's assistants).
He has handled Hudson-Odoi very poorly as did Sarri which is why I didn't name check him above. That is a stain on his time here as far as I am concerned.
However he oversaw a top four finish when no one gave him a hope in hells chance of doing so while also making an FA Cup final. It would be ridiculous to write off his stint in charge as a failure despite many (who don't watch Chelsea on a weekly basis or really have any idea what is going on at the club) revelling in doing so.
Having said all that I have gone on record on here saying this job came about five years to early for him and predicted he'd be gone before February (not much of a prediction, it was clearly coming). We have sacked better managers for a lot less than Lampard. I feel this was the right decision.
You have visions of a club legend coming in and working miracles but it wasn't to be.
I also went on record saying I could see him becoming the best Englishman since Robson and I stand by that. Losing your job at Chelsea certainly isn't a mark of your managerial credentials.
He is very young in managerial terms and I have seen enough of him to believe he will be a great success in the years to come.
I know it's the in thing on here and online and elsewhere to hate on Lampard and ridicule him. He isn't without his faults and I have gone over them enough on here but he is a young Englishman in one of the toughest gigs in this country. He can leave with his head held high.
Fingers crossed Tuchel can come in, do a job and the season isn't a complete write off.
Also, fuck Twitter and the knuckle draggers who consume it who have never felt the inside of a women with their idea of banter. Can't stand those cunts.
Anyway, as you were.
