Reading Talk Like Ted atm.... awesome, if anyone does a lot of public speaking or presenting for their work I would completely recommend it
Also if anyone has a bit of time to kill I would advise looking into TED Talks, they're pretty cool

TED app is amazing, just listen to brilliant ideas or views or just something completely different that I've never thought about before and it's fascinating. My favourite one is Ken Robinson talking about education and creativity.
Currently reading the Esselmont written books in the Malazan world. Any fantasy fiction readers here, I would highly recommend the series

Some awesome ones on there... there is a guy (can't remember who off the top of my head) did a talk on Social Equality for his charity, raised over $1m in about 20 mins through donations.... impressive

I've been reading a book called The name of the wind. If you like your fantasy fiction this is definitely one to read. It's one of the best I've ever read in this genre and it's not your typical "unlikely hero steps up to save the world by going on a quest across the continent with a trusty band of companions"

Just started reading Gone Girl, finally. Felt like I'd given myself enough time after seeing the film that I would be able to get into it without fully expecting what would happen on the next page to actually happen. Turns out I was wrong and that it's just like the film, and that I remember near enough all of it.
Guess I'm not surprised, if I was going to rewrite my book for a film I'd stick pretty close to the text (right down to some of the passages of writing), but at least there is a more obvious conflict of character in the book which is enjoyable. Like, you can tell Amy is a cunt right from the get-go, even though most people probably think Nick is because he's so chill.

Been reading Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb, it's quite good. More solid fantasy fiction

I tried it with Gone Girl, and with The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, but I always hit a lull in the books where I get fed up because I know what happens. And the page turners and cliff hangers don't have the same effect. I might try Shutter Island but knowing the ending will probably put me off.

Childish Yup, really the only thing that the book still has going for it is the way that she's present the characters like I said. Finishing chapters has absolutely no buzz to it having seen the film, even though I can obviously tell it's so well written and would be a massive draw had I picked this up first. Shame, really, as I had seen the book in waterstone's about a month before I even knew about the film and thought the book looked really interesting.

Shutter Island definitely wouldn't be half as good if you know the outcome. One of those movies you can't really watch multiple times.
I read Fight Club after I'd seen the movie and think I enjoyed it even more but then I tried to rewatch the movie and couldn't get through it.

Gave up with Gone Girl, should have watched it before the film. On which note, I've just read If I Stay in about three hours. Really enjoyable read, and well composed in the way it flits between the current and memories. 7/10 overall. Probably watch the film tonight.

Second book of 2015 is finished, after reading The Book Thief in about a day and a half. Really, really, good story although I felt it lost something of itself towards the end- almost as if the first half felt more genuine, like Zusak had put more into the first 300 pages or so in terms of detail and the pacing and putting the pieces of the story together. It picked up with the climax and epilogue but there was something amiss when he introduced Hans' War Squadron etc. Lent a LOT from Catch-22, right down to the one page chapters too lol. I'll probably give the film a skip as I can't see it translating well and it had pretty subpar reviews. Overally its a solid 7 out of 10.
Onto The Grapes of Wrath now but already 40 or so pages in and it feels like a chore. Steinbeck is just such a tedious writer, even if his stories are great. Reckon this will be my stumbling block but better to get it out of the way at the start of the year I suppose.

Yes. Haunted.
Very good but a few parts made me feel very ill.

23 different short stories, eh? Sounds interesting, bit like Stephen King's Creepshow by the sounds.
