Starting to get annoyingly hopeful, and maybe Buttler has saved his job in this test, batted really well

Unchanged squad. Unbelievable.

Farcical really, although is there anyone knocking on the door who could come in? Get the feeling an overhaul is needed but it's been that way for several years now. The worst thing is before this series I thought Broad was done and shouldn't be picked and yet he's probably been the best bowler.

Ollie Pope's a 21 year old with an average in the 60s. But apparently that's not good enough to displace Buttler. There's also a miles better wicket keeper in Foakes with a better test average than Bairstow, but he's not good in ODIs so he can't get in the test team. Sibley is an opener who has the second highest average in county for anyone who's played 10 matches this season, but Roy is good at ODIs.
Are these players good enough to beat Cummins, Hazlewood, Lyon and another top 20 seamer in world cricket? Probably not, but we'll never know because we're so focused on players who are good in limited overs.

Like I say, Bayliss was hired as a Limited Overs coach on the back of Limited Overs success with the Sydney Sixers, not surprising that’s where his teams have gone as a rule. We won a World Cup so I’m not complaining too much, these things happen and we’ll be back on the right track soon enough hopefully.
Now the Hundred though, there’s a real fucking shambles

Deja vu with the batting collapse. Except this time it's to Mitch Marsh of all bowlers.

Buttler batting at 6 or 7 with the tail looks a completely different player to batting further up.

Buttler batting at 6 or 7 with the tail looks a completely different player to batting further up. It enables him to play a bit looser and more like his one day self because you're in a score now mode. He's also just a very good player, his average since coming back into the squad is higher than Root's. Honestly he just looks a bit tuckered and could do with a bit of a break. Any rebuild should have him considered, but hes probably going to get ODI captaincy soonish which may limit his effectiveness in tests.

Yeah I reckon he’s probably saved his job in the last 2 tests, and his record since the second test isn’t actually as bad as the statistics say. He should be made the test captain before the one day captain though.
Burns, Sibley, Denly, Root, Pope, Stokes, Buttler (wk), Archer, Leach, Broad, Anderson looks alright on paper for the winter imo. Don’t know enough to know who would replace Denly and I think he’s been given a harsh deal anyway.

I’ve never seen someone strike a ball cleaner than Buttler, when he’s in form. I’d keep him over Bairstow in the test side any day.
It’s asking a lot of the young lads but to be honest, a team of:
Burns Sibley/Crawley Denly Root Stokes Foakes/Pope Buttler Woakes/Curran Archer Leach Broad/Anderson
Looks good to me, and gives us a few options. I maintain finding another opener to go with Burns should be our top priority though.

Yeah I prefer Foakes as WK to Buttler in tests. Think England’s middle order isn’t that bad, just need to sort the other opener and number 3. At the end of the day the Australian batsmen sans Smith have been just as bad.

Tried doing a team of the series yesterday and it shocked me it's more England than Australia...
Burns Denly Labuschagne Smith Root Stokes Buttler (wk) Cummins Archer Broad Hazlewood

Can't have a man as wk if he's never put gloves on surely?
Nice to see Denly punish Harris for that drop last night with a fairly accomplished knock here.
