Seeing Kendrick in november lets gooo
Also heres my general, not very detailed cos cba conceptual analysis of the album:
First disc is Big Steppers. The idea of Big Stepping is basically avoiding his issues, from relationship to generational trauma, and ‘tiptoeing round the conversation’ as mentioned at the end of We Cry Together by what is deemed to be his therapist. The tap dancing exemplifies this, and is prevalent throughout the first disc, and the first half of the album basically serves as some ascending accountability, he addresses his infidelity in Worldwide Steppers, and his general masucline ego with Father Time (classic song btw). I feel its all about him slowly realising he needs to value his family (new born kids and wife), so We Cry Together serves as the height of him avoiding his issues. Thats why Purple Hearts is the outro. Its a crescendo that he is now ready to be the husband for the mother of his kids.
Second disc starts with ‘session 10, breakthrough’ so its ALL about reaching acceptance and being accountable for issues he was previously avoiding. He also accepts that he can no longer burden himself as the Saviour of his community. Mr Morale is all about accepting the fragility of his ego and addressing generational trauma that are usually swept under the rug by his community (transphobia & sexual abuse). Its basically a whole self help disc in music form. Mirror is him choosing his family and himself before anything else.
This whole album feels like a play and theres way more to unpack with alot more of the songs as individual themes. Theres also the dichotomy mirror theory of the tracklisting that actually makes more sense than the DAMN. backwards theory imo

Don't think I've ever come around on a song as much as We Cry Together. Hated it the first time I listened and skipped it the next couple times through but gave it another chance after watching a couple of reviews and it's actually ridiculously good, especially Taylour Paige on the third verse, her flow and voice are incredible. Favourite song is either Father Time or Mother I Sober. Do think it's got a bit too much filler, which is natural for most hip hop albums over an hour long (apart from pretty much just TPAB), but there's no even average songs on it just lacks a bit of cohesion in terms of the sound imo.

When Mr Morale came out I really didn’t care for Count Me Out one but while I’ve been going through shite personally lately I’ve leaned on that song HARD to the point it’s probably my favourite Kendrick song ever
Musically, it’s not that good. There are better songs on this album and far better in Kendrick’s discography but that song has hit me like a ton of bricks in the last few weeks

Just came back from Kendrick, was fucking amazing. Every time I've seen him he's gotten better. Maybe could have had more TPAB but he played Money Trees so I can't have too many complaints on the setlist. Definitely worth getting closer to the central extended bit of the stage than the front if you wanna be close to where he's performing the hyped up stuff.

Yeah more TPAB would be great but knew he wouldn’t cos he did that mini lounge inspired tour for it with fewer locations. Guess it makes it more special but he only did it in NA so fuck that
Anyway, probably the best concert ive been to. I really hope he has way more material to give us cos he is on a different level as an artist now. Way ahead of his peers at this point imo

seeing him on Sunday, can't wait yeah that was magic. I know it’s a heavy song and not really concert material but I really hoped he’d do Mother I Sober. But an amazing show anyways

But an amazing show anyways Saw him last week and I had the same feeling about Auntie Diaries, knew its not really a concert track but the way the music swells and the energy builds in the second half literally gives me chills, would love to see it performed live. That being said can't have any complaints about the show. Was absolutely phenomenal from start to finish.

Nas dropping 4 great albums in 2 years during his legacy/retirement run needs to be talked about when discussing whose better outta him and Hov. This new KD is probably a top 5 Nas album aswell

Anyone got their AOTY lists? Haven't listened to as much as I should have this year so would be good to see what I've missed out on. No particular order for mine.
Freddie Gibbs - Soul Sold Separately Roc Marciano & Alchemist - Elephant Man's Bones JID - The Forever Story Denzel Curry - Melt My Eyez See Your Future Benny the Butcher - Tana Talk 4 Lupe Fiasco - Drill Music In Zion
They're pretty much the only albums I've listened to more than a couple of times this year.

Great list and tbh, so many artists have dropped contenders recently in Soul & Simz. I’ll count them to my 2023 list atp.
Morale - Kendrick KD3 - Nas SSS - Gibbs Luv 4 Rent - Smino Forever Story - JID

Haven’t listened to a few of those so I’ll get on that over Christmas.
I’m pretty sure Ab-Souls album is gonna get added to my list, listened to it for the first time last night and loved it.

TDE making a comeback, SZA dropped a solid album aswell. Q got something cooking aswell

If Q can come up with anything like Blank Face again then I’m happy. CrasH Talk was alright but the features didn’t fit as well as Blank Face
Like that Jada verse is so gritty I’ll never forget it
