Charged with 3 counts of sexual activity with a minor and 1 count of grooming.
The latter count would suggest he was aware of her age, no?

Charged not convicted which means he's technically still innocent. That one charge for grooming sticks out like a sore thumb though.

For the first time ever I wish he was a Liverpool player given our players were being asked about their grooming routines by the press when we announced the Nivea deal.
'A little text, few wink emojis'
Although grooming doesn't necessarily mean he knew her age. Buying her things is classed as grooming which he'd probably still do if she was of age.

i thought that's exactly what it means? to be charged with grooming means you're aware of the person's age and pursue it anyway
which also explains why that's the charge that is causing the most furore, because it rules out the one defence that he had

I don't think it needs the knowledge of her being underage. I think it's the same as the original theory that he slept with a girl who he didn't know was underage.

The prosecution has to prove that he knew she was underage. That's a potential defence in a grooming case.

No because grooming is pretty much based on mens rea. Cos the actus reus is fine if she's above age. Pretty sure that's called dating otherwise.

I think it needs to be investigated just how much Sunderland knew, and at what level decisions were taken to bring him back from suspension. That's on a footballing level.
On a legal level, I think he's unlucky legally in that he's been found unanimously not guilty by the jury of her giving him a blowjob but found guilty on a majority 10-2, after a verdict could not be unanimously reached and the jury were sent back out, of fingering her.
I read her statement with a bit of cynicism purely because of what has been reported with regards to her comments and actions throughout; bragging to friends about the encounters, leading the conversations at times. A lot of the criticism she'll have had personally will have been from those people she had previously been bragging to, purely because they're the only people who will be aware who she is as to the rest of us she legally remains anonymous.
Also think this has definitely been a bit of a case of trial by media; with all the dribs and drabs feeding out about what he's alledged to have done, is it any surprise several people including Steven Fletcher decided not to be called as a witness for Johnson given what it would mean to their public image if/when he was found guilty? I realise the benefits of cases being public, but in some instances I think they can impact on a trial negatively.
That said, he's a fucking idiot.
