Sorry to hear that mate, that’s grim Hope you find something else soon - what do you work as? work in sales for an architectural lighting company, pretty niche which has helped in some ways and hindered in others, the whole lighting industry is fucked off the back of a total lack of market confidence so nobody is really hiring Considering trying to freelance for a bit on the lighting design side but that depends if anyone's building at the moment

There are loads of accountants in amongst us now isn't there, or was that just because a few folks were like me and started moving in to finance a couple years ago?
Anyways I'm about to start the CIMA studies, funded by work which is a good sign they're keeping me around. In different circumstances I'd actually be looking to move jobs but between COVID worries and hopefully getting a mortgage sorted it's better off to sit tight and get my qualifications I think

Only ended up about 290 better off from that 500 pounds NHS payment between Tax, NI, Pension and Student loan. I blame Boris.

It’s only in a call centre, which isn’t exactly where I want to be but it’s my way into the finance industry and can give me experience in customer service which is what I want. I’ve applied for a couple of £25k+ jobs lately and been turned down on my lack of customer service experience. So yeah not exactly storming the world but it’s a start at least. I’m still in this job and found out about 3 weeks ago that our site, which was originally down for a £75m development, is being closed down because of the cost. Instead they’re putting £150m into developing a site in Milton Keynes, conveniently. So our choices were either work from home or take voluntary (lmao) redundancy. So I’ve started working from home as of last Tuesday and honestly wish I’d been able to sooner. Once I get past Loose Women and Judge Rinder day time TV goes brilliant for a solid 3 hours with Tenable, Tipping Point and The Chase.

Good that you got the option to WFH. Did anyone actually take redundancy over that option?
I absolutely love working from home and not even in a "I can skive" way, I'm way more productive in my own environment. And putting the washing on or getting a bit of hoovering done in downtime is preferable to skimming through an industry mag in the canteen, having to humour some assholes opinions on football. Thankfully my company was fairly open to WFH pre-pandemic and everything they're saying suggests we'll all have our own choice once offices reopen. Only thing they have said is they want everyone to be within reasonable reach of one of the offices (i.e they dont want folk pissing off to Bali or south of Spain).

Quite a few have but only those who were near retirement anyway there are some there who’ve been in the job for 40+ years so will get a lovely redundancy pay out to ease them into their pensions. Our union did a great job with it to be fair so I have to give them a lot of credit.

That'll be the big fancy new building going in near the train station then (I know it but aren't naming it given you haven't and I imagine you don't want your posts linked to it ) I quite like WFH every now and then but it's a struggle to be as productive as I am in the office - much easier with multiple screens and being able to have face to face meetings. Tenable is awful too. I usually end up with Brooklyn 99 or Benidorm on in the background just as noise.

In different circumstances I'd actually be looking to move jobs but between COVID worries and hopefully getting a mortgage sorted it's better off to sit tight and get my qualifications I think lol how much can change in a couple months. I mentioned there that in diff circumstances I'd be looking to move and it was because the workload was insane and the atmosphere was properly toxic for a long time, but my personality means I just keep my head down and carry on. Came to a head about a month ago when the other assistant accountant left and they just expected me to take up the slack, had a 1-to-1 with my manager where I laid out all the concerns and talked about requesting a salary review for over 4 months with no movement on it and just how he handled that call really fucked me off so I sent my CV out to recruiters straight away. I should have sent the CV out months ago. They've been under paying me by about £4k. The sad thing is if they'd reacted differently to my initial salary request, I'd have probably been happy enough with a relatively small increase because it would at least feel like there's movement in the role and room to grow etc. But now that the CV is out there I've had one offer already that I'm gonna turn down just because of commuting. I'm expecting to hear back from one place today or tomorrow, and on Thursday there two old managers (who both left this company in the past year) contacted me to see if I was looking because they thought of me for roles that are coming up. Because I'm in the final stages of one role, they've both put the burners on and I'm interviewing for both jobs this evening after work. Just really disappointed in the current job, like it's been a hectic crazy hard year for everyone but just how they've handled it all and how they've treated staff (not just me, everyone in finance is fucking miserable), I just don't understand. Basic communication and decency to your staff and I would put up with an awful lot of shit like. Anyways, nearly out of this hellhole

Yeh it's mad how much companies undervalue their existing employees. My current work is certainly the best company I've worked for in recognising it though. They talked in March about how last year there was too much turnover in staff and they were making it a goal over the next year to cut the number of people leaving the business. They seemed to have actually looked at the wider impacts of staff turnover like the hours/spend on recruitment, induction and training - not only the new employee but others in the business who would have to take time out to do any training. Doesn't seem to have been all talk either since I got a random letter last week saying they had done market research on salary levels and even though I was within the market average I was getting a 5% increase.
Other places I've experienced much the same as you. Lures and vague promises of salary reviews but them doing everything possible to delay it. Then when someone leaves they offer £2k to employees to refer someone for a role.
