I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Diego Lopez once. Not even once. I was rather rat-arsed at the time but thank you

Some of the brilliant young players get a bit overrated here I reckon. Wouldn't get the same credit if they weren't young and exciting.

Yeah, there are so many players that have had better years than Varane in particular and Pogba, less so. If you are going to pick a defender, how about Alaba? Or Javi Martinez?
Varane isn't in the top 100 on the Guardian list and is 93 on the FourFourTwo list, which is fair enough because he shouldn't be near in the top 15 by any criteria you can come up with. I'd like to see what the reasoning is for him being in the best 15 in the world this year other than those two El Clasico games. If it is playing well against top Spanish teams/Spain well Neymar was man of the match against Real Madrid and Spain yet most people who have Varane in their top 15 don't have Neymar in it.

Goodness. I got scoffed at for putting a player who scored two goals against England, two goals against Spain and three goals against Italy this year in my top 15 and people are putting Varane in now.
I'm feeling a lot better about my list.

Yeah Varane really is an odd inclusion, can understand that he's stood out more than most centre backs solely in the sense that they often go unappreciated and his athleticism stood out brightly in a highly televised game.

Looks as though this has pretty much run it's course for us, hopefully we got to 50 votes. Now we just need U R GAY to post the master list.

Sigh, I guess I'll do it then, even though I'm still not sure whether we're ranking the best players in the world right now or the best players in 2013.
1. Lionel Messi 2. Cristiano Ronaldo 3. Zlatan Ibrahimovic 4. Franck Ribery 5. Neymar 6. Gareth Bale 7. Luis Suarez 8. Andres Iniesta 9. Sergio Aguero 10. Wayne Rooney 11. Marco Reus 12. Bastian Schweinsteiger 13. Phillip Lahm 14. Cesc Fabregas 15. Thomas Muller

With 50 votes collected, I can reveal and it's no surprise that the Soccer Nerd Central's Player of the Year 2013 is awarded to... Cristiano Ronaldo! Lionel Messi finished a distant 2nd with a long gap back to our eventual 3rd place winner, Franck Ribery. Ribery fought off tough competition from 4 other players, in a top 7 that was judged way ahead of the rest of the field. Those other four players, Gareth Bale, Luis Suarez, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Phillip Lahm. The overall list took 60 different players and a full list is below.

Not a bad list up to a certain point, some of the tail enders might have the Guardian comments section going mental and again my objection to Varane being rated that highly but don't want to get into that again. Thanks Jimbo for the list.
Buffon is the highest on the Guardian list that doesn't make it here but that's fair enough, he didn't stand out.

Hardly call Varane rated highly when he was on 4 out of the 50 lists lol
