Gerrard and Lampard in midfield, which means Henderson has to do the work of three players. Nah you're alright. Wilshere, Barkley, Lallana, anyone but Lampard.

Gerrard sitting at international level would be disastrous imo. And Lampard starting is an absolute joke that is pretty much pointless discussing because it's so obvious why you think that.

Llorente has been very good for Juve lately. Don't spoof This. He's been excellent for the past 2 months or so.

It's a shame Carrick has dropped off this season because he'd have been great in a midfield 3 behind Gerrard and Henderson. In big games I think Gerrard & Wilshere ahead of Jones might be a decent option. Gerrard could drop slightly deeper and dictate play whilst any midfield would struggle with Wilshere & Jones constantly running around them as opposed to someone like Carrick or Lampard who just don't have the legs to do that now. Jones has shown in a few big games for us he can be great in that DM role. But in the games against likes of Costa Rica and teams who aren't built around pace like Italy then it's a great chance for the likes of Henderson as long as he can bring his Liverpool form to England.
Surely anything's better than lining up against a team as mobile as Germany with a midfield three of Gerrard, Lampard & Barry with Milner out wide.

Has Llorente actually been dropped though? Hasn't scored for Spain in over 3 years, didn't play for Juventus much earlier this season and was marginalised at Athletic last year.

If you say so. Personally I think Lampard is a better option in centre midfield than Wilshere who is constantly falling over, Barkley who is an attacking midfielder and Lallana who is a winger. Lampard isn't good if he's not an attacking midfielder, Wilshere and Henderson are probably the only two true centre mids we have. Gerrard and Lampard haven't got the legs (at 34 and 36) to be up and down a pitch in the way Henderson and Wilshere can. You have this big negligence for energy and players who can run but in 110 degree heat, I'd much rather have two players in their early 20s than a 34 year old sitting with a 36 year old just beyond him. And like #FreeBTS said there is literally one reason you'd prefer Lampard, no matter what reasons you give (keeps falling over, seriously?)

Lampard shouldn't be in the squad, never mind starting.

Lampard is an attacking midfielder in the same way Gerrard is. His strongest point is attack. He's ridiculously weak defensively which is why I'd much rather have Henderson, Gerrard, Wilshere, even Barkley, in ahead of him.
And it's not a case of "Gerrard and Lampard" not playing for England. It's just Lampard, who has never been able to pull out consistently good performances for England while Lampard has. He's going to be 36 by the time the World Cup is in full swing, he really shouldn't be anywhere near the England squad. He doesn't play enough for Chelsea and when he does, meh, he's kind of good. Gerrard is probably having his most difficult period for us but he's still coming up with the goods for England, so he should be in the squad regardless of whether he's captain or not.

I'd have fucking Phil Stamp in the England team over Jack 'Red Card In Knock Out Round' Wilshere

Who would you have over Wilshere? Gerrard, Lampard, Henderson and Barry. Not necessarily in that order. Barry is very poor at international level and Lampard shouldn't even be in the squad imo. If we're having a midfield three then I'd want Gerrard, Henderson and Wilshere but I have no idea who would hold.

I'd have Henderson holding.

Whenever we play Chelsea he's always your weak spot defensively in the midfield, he's an average player defensively.
I don't care if he can play a full 90, well done Frank on doing the bare minimum of a footballer. He's slow, not particularly effective when trying to keep possession and even more ineffective when trying to win it back. He's a risk we don't need to take. And he is a risk, believe that. Taking a 36 year old and starting him, ever, is a risk when you're going to be chasing the majority of games and never really having the better of possession.
The day Frank Lampard became an influential member of the England squad must have passed me, and everyone else, by. Outstanding player for Chelsea? Yes. Outstanding for England? No, bare minimum. I also think when we talk about "no better man" for scoring a goal when you need one we should bring up that he hasn't scored in an international tournament for 10 years.
