Agree with @djed on Mertesacker this season. I know I disagreed with you on him some time ago but I'm starting to believe the hype with him now. The only thing he lacks in his game is pace, which you'd think would be a necessity to be a top centre back in England but he's still really good. Himself and Martin Skrtel have been pretty consistent all year. As has Lovren.

Gary Neville summed it up absolutely brilliant against Palace. "He's from the Tony Adams school of defending, I'm not going to run after you I'm just going to win the ball", the thing that stops him from being caught out is he nearly always do so because he puts himself in a position to do so

He's certainly an intelligent centre half, if I've ever seen one. It's not often people praise a defensive player for his football brain (generally play-making midfielders) but if any centre back is worth praising for that trait, it's him.

Koscielny is rapid, Vermaelen isn't too far behind.

Genuinely don't think we've had a centre-back in my time that I'd describe as pacy

@eric very few centre backs in England have pace. Is there even one who is genuinely very quick? Compared to Mertesacker, there are several tbh. I think it's hard because people judge a defender's pace on the attacking player's pace, and let's be honest, there aren't many slow centre forwards.

That guy Ilori we got in the summer broke Ronaldo's "speed record" (for lack of a better term) at Sporting Lisbon. Not that we've gotten an opportunity to see him, mind.

Good point that. Also rarely see centre backs at full sprint so it's difficult to judge

That's true, people never really comment on a player's pace if he's not attacking.

Only poor defenders end up relying on their pace to save them.

@dosage when was the last time Kabul did any sort of running for Spurs? Isn't he like permanently injured? I highly doubt he'd beat Walker or Lennon in a race. Injury aside (didn't seem to faze him last time he came back from injury) but he's still quick as fuck for a centre half Ledley King is probably the quickest centre half I've seen at Spurs with and without a ball but then again its not a surprise as he started out a central midfielder. The ground that man made up against Robben for that tackle...

I don't really think John Terry is worth the hassle that he bring with him just for one tournament at 33. Remember how good Ferdinand was last year when he got on team of the year? He also had his indian summer season last year but he wasn't worth bringing back either. Cahill should be main man with eventually Jones or someone else.
Also Chelsea have defended well recently but it's nice to defend whenever you have another centre back in front of you, a runner like Ramires and an intelligent midfielder like Matic who won't get caught out of position. Then you have Willian tracking back too.
I'm sure our defenders would love to play with that sort of midfield protection this season.

Carroll's appeal has been denied. Absolute farce of a decision but it's great for us.
