Knives Out is better than pretty much all of the Best Picture nominations? Really enjoyed that.

Still haven't caught it! Seeing JoJo Rabbit next week and hopefully catch Knives Out before it leaves the cinema. I'm delighted for Rian Johnson that it's getting so much acclaim
edit: In other news, I saw Netflix released the scene in Marriage Story where Driver and Johansson fling increasingly bitter and vitriolic insults at eachother on YouTube. I get that they're, I dunno, generating Oscar buzz for it? But it's such a central scene and it's so related to everything building up to that moment, it's baffling to me that you'd release it on it's own. If you haven't seen the movie I dunno how that scene comes off, but yeah, weird decision imo

From the films I’ve seen I’d probably put it around par with Joker and behind Jojo Rabbit and Marriage Story. Backlash against Joker now the nominations are out has been predictably boring imo.

It was always going to happen, there was backlash against Scarlett getting nominated the other day despite her being fucking incredible in marriage story, haven’t seen JoJo Rabbit yet, going to see it tomorrow. The best thing about it was the same people prattling on about Scarlett being nominated went and listed a load of people who didn’t get nominated as though it proved a point, the list included Beyoncé, wtf should Beyoncé have been nominated for? Lion King was average at best and Beyoncé wasn’t great.
Strange world we live in.

I mean aye, plenty dickheads about, but Joker getting 11 nominations is a bit ridiculous tbh. It's really not THAT good - I liked it but 11?? I really think Phoenix carries so much of it. I suppose I haven't actually seen the other Best Film or Best Director movies so it's hard for me to say Joker shouldn't be in those categories, but I do find it hard to believe it's better than The Farewell or Phillips deserves the nod ahead of Greta Gerwig. I think Phoenix 100% deserves the Best Actor nomination, and outside of that, best cinematography, makeup, costume maybe?
With ScarJo, there is absolutely no doubt she deserves her nomination for Marriage Story (haven't seen JoJo as mentioned) but she has come out with a load of tripe lately and has really gone down in my estimation. Her stuff about Woody Allen and diversity is just backward nonsense. While maybe people shouldn't hold it against her work (though that is also debateable, artist/art etc), it's inevitable that people will say "fuck her". But yes Beyoncé is just a weird shout, people love her unconditionally and uncritically, it's weird to me.
Long ramble but also the Oscars are mostly nonsense so I dunno why people are getting so het up about it all. I like to see the filmmakers and actors that I admire getting recognition and acclaim but that's about it really.

I never understand people complaining about 11 nominations though, the awards are so vast and different, how the fuck am I or any random person on Twitter supposed to be able to properly evaluate like best sound editing or visual effects? Not saying the academy isn’t problematic but it’s just a number to me, like who cares. I’m only bothered about the best picture and actor/actresses awards. Plus I think my back is just up re: Joker because of how dumb some of the criticism is, there’s obviously some valid points but the stuff about possible copycats or it being too violent is just plain stupid.
Only thing I really disagree with is Sam Rockwell not being nominated for best supporting for Jojo Rabbit, think he’s amazing in every scene. Hard for me not to think Pacino and Pitt aren’t in there massively on name value.

1917 was excellent, but didn’t hit me like Marriage Story or Jojo Rabbit. It’s so intense though, I don’t know whether this comparison has been made anywhere but it reminded me so so much of The Last of Us, just a constant sense of trepidation and horror mixed in with some beautiful moments. Would probably be a worthy Oscar winner but would be a bit of a boring safe choice for me.
Has anyone watched Parasite? Saw a trailer and it looks fantastic so I’m desperate to see it now.

Saw The Nightingale this evening. It’s pretty brutal at times, pulls no punches but I thought it was really really great. Loses it’s way a wee bit around the third act but overall highly recommend. 4/5

Much easier watching subtitled films in the cinema since I have no distractions. I’m a nightmare for picking my phone up or whatever at home and then losing track of what’s happening in a subtitled film.

Yeah but the but where Bill Hader gets stunned at the end and goes limp is fucking sick.

Parasite is crazy. I went into it knowing absolutely nothing bar the screen grab of the kid with his eyes rolling up and it was in Korean. Just go see it.
