Besides, people really only care about the top 10, is there much difference between 59 and 49? 10 places m8. I don't like these things cos defenders and (particularly) keepers are usually massively undervalued. Haven't looked at this yet though so I could be wrong about this time. Stu Holden must be in #CLplayer I stand by the notion Stuart Holden is football's greatest tragedy; could have revolutionised the game if given the chance.

That's cos attacking players do the most important thing though, so surely deserve the plaudits in lists like this?

That's cos attacking players do the most important thing though, so surely deserve the plaudits in lists like this? Everyone does a different job, in big games top-quality defenders can make as much of a difference as attackers. They also tend to be captains which can lead by example. The problem, especially in good team is that they struggle to stand out. Take for example, Ramos who had a very good Euro 2012 I thought but was barely mentioned as one of the best players. Anyway in general there is a real lack of stand-out defending these days as the game has become more attacking. There is also a lack of liberos, Beckenbauer style. Stoppers are only going to stand-out in back-to-the-wall style tournament performances. There will always be an attacker that will catch the eye more. Defenders that were good on the ball in the past could control a game whereas that is now left to a defensive midfielder. So it even less likely to see defenders considered as great. The closest we could get is if Thiago Silva is outstanding for Brazil and PSG this year and they are both successful he could be top few in the Ballon d'Or next year. Even then Neymar and Ibrahimovic will be the more fashionable option no matter how Silva plays.

Overall, defenders don't make the difference that attackers do though. The odd match yeah, but over the course of a season your attacking players win you games. That's why attacking players deserve prominence on these lists.

I understand that but that doesn't mean that defender contributions should be undervalued either. They have Pedro 15 odd places ahead of Alaba here which is a bit odd and suggests a certain bias to attacking players. Defensive players that are versatile and have a wide range of skills like Alaba, Lahm and Martinez at Bayern are really valuable to top-level teams, in particular, happy to see Lahm in 7th place, well deserved.
