Any of you lot been to the fright nights event at Thorpe Park? I'd figured the sort of horror maze thing was getting more and more popular given we're getting them pop up around here on random farms and the like, but I've been reading reviews of the "brave it alone" thing they're doing this year and I just don't get the appeal? Basically, in normal opening time you pay a little extra to do one of the mazes, go through in a group, few live actors, few jump scares, nothing much. Then if you pay extra you're able to go into the mazes after the park closes, on your own, for a more 'intense' experience. But from what I've read (and seen on the odd clip on YouTube) you're stripped, bound with gaffa tape, pissed on (fake urine obviously), made to handle genitals (sex toys), before being led back out in front of everyone bound gagged and covered in whatever. Now having written that I've probably sold it to some of you who'd get a kick from that but, really, why? I take it you've heard about their Derren Brown thing for next year. Has this intrigued you at all?

Tbf I think it's naff how everyone has the poppy forced upon them if they're in front of a tv camera, it should be a personal choice. Surely you'd have to ask who the fuck cares if someone isn't wearing a poppy, but sadly I've seen mongs tweeting celebrities on Twitter moaning at them for not doing so so now everyone has to do so.

Typical Merlin, spending a stupendous amount of money on a glorified dark ride and the bulk of it will be just to get him to put his name to it.

I really don't like Conor McGregor or James McLean. But I don't like the whole forcing of the poppy on everyone thing they have going in England.

Don't mind McGregor though his rant is a bit over the top. The poppy should be a remembrance thing, not a star of David type thing where you can spot the immigrant not wearing one. It is a disgrace how little remembrance we have in this country for the people we lost in WWI though. For the 1916 centenary, my local council are creating a garden of remembrance. Dad's pushing for a plaque commemorating those who died in WWI and nobody is supporting him, and he's even had a bit of hostility about it. Nobody from this area died or even took part in 1916. Whereas over 100 men died in WWI from this area alone. It's ridiculous

Got no qualms with anyone not wearing the poppy. I don't wear it myself and as much as I respect what they did for the country way back when, I'm not really into remembering wars, victorious or otherwise. Just doesn't interest me.

Whereas over 100 men died in WWI from this area alone. It's ridiculous They're all doing that, I had to cover a council meeting in Dublin for my course and they were all getting massive grants and funding for a million different events. Sure didn't the Budget designate 50m to 1916 celebrations or something? Yet the housing crisis is spiralling out of control. In historical terms, I wouldn't be the biggest fan of celebrating 1916 Rising as a really joyous occasion. It was incredibly unpopular at the time with the people of Dublin, there's a mythology about it that didn't really happen - you never hear about the children that were shot for example, also if you actually read the things the Pearse family were saying in the lead-up and it's hard not to see him as a bit of a nutter I think. It was only the overzealous reaction of the British government that caused the backlash, mixed in with Sinn Fein propaganda at the time that turned into this great event in hindsight, when really most people were way more affected by WW1. I think that it's because Ireland doesn't have a military history of its own so this is the closest that people feel they can get to being jingoistic.
