3 days in a row with no deaths, single figure daily new infections (5,6,8) and down to 13 people in intensive care with Coronavirus. Yet the suggestion that we should consider imposing quarantine measures on people travelling from England is "divisive" and "a shortcut to independence".

I just don't see how any border control can realistically be put in place.

Exactly the same as with people flying into the UK. They're not held for 14 days, just told to self-isolate for that time and can be checked up on. It's a system to deter rather than block. As we've seen over the last few months, the vast majority of people are decent and follow health advice for the greater good. Will always be some who flout the rules but the number of people coming in would be vastly reduced.

We've a similar issue in the Republic in terms of border control. Honestly we've gotten things to a controllable level and I really think they should do more to restrict travel in and out of the country now, but they're opening things right up and just trying to do public campaigns for people to holiday in Ireland instead... Talk of "air bridges" with certain countries that are deemed safe to travel to and from, but UK are currently on that list?! It's madness when you look at England like.
We've a new government formed so I'm wondering if that will result in a change of policy, as the Health Minister has changed as well. But I'm not sure it will as Fine Gael are still in government, just in official coalition now.

Glad I took the punt (pun not intended) on rebooking Venice a few days ago because prices are now flying up. It is mad how Europe are basically opening up to us though given how bad our figures are comparatively. Obviously their economies are in a lot worse state than they're letting in if they need the money so much.

The deterrent is the same as the normal lockdown restrictions, if you get caught you get fined. That, and the fact following health advice is the decent thing to do, is enough to seriously reduce the number of people coming into Scotland from a country failing to deal with this virus.
I see the Mayor of Leicester took the Trump line of defence to the number of positive tests in Leicester - apparently down to "more tests being done". Is England really still in the situation where not all people showing symptoms can get a test? If not, more people getting tested is because more people are showing symptoms. Brushing off more positive tests as a consequence of doing more tests is insane.
As I'm typing this I see they have announced lockdown is to "tighten" in Leicester - closing down non-essential shops and schools which is a step backwards and not just the delayed step forward most of the press were reporting all day.

I've put the problem there in bold. I just don't see how it can be policed, and likewise with the UK trying to enforce a local lockdown. How are they going to stop any Leicester locals from just going to the next town for a pint? There's nothing in the law as far as I am aware that the police can charge them for. There are more than enough tests available - you don't even need to have symptoms in order to book one (although you're supposed to, they don't check), so the "testing more people" excuse just doesn't wash. Biggest question for me out of this is that if you're closing schools because you don't think it's safe for them to be open, how are you then saying they should be open elsewhere, or that you're going to be fining people in August if they don't send their kids back. Colossal shitshow, either way.

That's what I'm trying to say - it doesn't need policed. Lockdown as a whole was a success because the vast majority of people did the right thing, not because the police were patrolling the streets. You're always going to get people taking the piss but instructing people to do something and having 99.x% follow that instruction isn't worth giving up on because some will ignore. As with everything being put in place around Coronavirus - it's all in an effort to reduce, not remove, the risk of spread.

I see Twitter is handling the reopening of the pub's well. Calling anyone who goes to spoons a racist is an interesting take so I'm interested to see how farfetched things are going to be by the end of the day.
