Some very strong and very strange quotes from Southgate tonight. Gets the jeers, doesn't mind if they're aimed at him over the players but at the same time says the noise has affected the group.

Remember that Fat Les Vindaloo song and the lyrics are “We’re England we’re gonna score one more than you”? That is Southgate’s footballing philosophy

Scoring one would be spoiling us at this rate.

Maybe it was all just this group, because compared to the rest of the tournament what the fuck was going on here

If the lesson from tonight is “Mainoo has to start”, I look forward to seeing them against a decent midfield that are getting up the pitch more than Slovenia. Yeah he should’ve started tonight but when the quality of opposition goes up I think England are in big trouble lol you'd think it was Didi Hamann in Istanbul the narrative coming out after the game about Mainoo. He was tidy enough in possession, nice little flick for Palmers chance and then slipped and nearly let Slovenia in. Wasn't much else.

Using 'tidy enough in possession' as some kind of derogatory comment is weird considering that's what we've been crying out for. He was good, if you can't see that then I'm not really sure what you're watching or there's probably some ulterior motive. Opposition is a caveat but I don't know why he wouldn't obviously be in people's teams for Sunday.
Also have no idea why Southgate so prominently featured him in March's friendlies (where he played well), just to completely go back on it for the actual tournament. Cba to even go on about the LB stuff anymore, a 26 man squad and we bring one who has been injured since January, it's honestly laughable.

Weren’t people asking for more control? I don’t feel like Mainoo provided that at all, everything looked just as disjointed as it has with Trent and Gallagher in there. Trent has been tidy in possession, bar a couple of mistakes on the half turn, but it’s severely limited him from what his strengths are. The first thing he tried when he came on, with Gordon on, was a long diagonal. It didn’t work on that occasion but that’s what he offers which none of the other England players can, but whatever FM tactic test Southgate has done here just doesn’t seem to suit anyone at all

Are you genuinely saying we looked the same with Mainoo second half as we did with Gallagher the first? Gallagher completed 17 passes, Mainoo 35, even just that alone speaks volumes. They didn't perform similarly at all, Gallagher was on the ball less than Mainoo and still lost possession more than him. Trent gives the ball away far too much for someone in that position and isn't effective in the press, he's just not a centre midfielder right now.

Not saying they looked better or worse, just that they were still disjointed and it was a lot of players standing round and occupying the same position. Playing narrow is all well and good but you also need to be able to go wide at times and I’ve very rarely seen England do that at this tournament. When they have it’s actually worked given both of their goals came from the right flank
I still think the biggest issue in the team is Foden and it’s not even particularly his performance bar the first game, it’s that he’s either being asked to, or is choosing to, sit in the middle of the pitch all game instead of offering any width. Trippier has been put out to pasture being asked to be the only player operating on the left, which he’s uncomfortable with anyway. So why not, at least while Shaw isn’t available, use an actual winger over there instead of trying to force Bellingham and Foden into the same position. A decent team will have a laugh countering against England because they look so beatable down the left
