I spent two years studying the fucker and I'm reluctant to give an opinion on it. Fuck being the politician that is expected to lobby a decision regarding it.

No real way to put this without sounding like a massive cunt but I'd like to think I'm quite well informed when it comes to most things, and even I can't even begin to fathom where to begin with Northern Ireland. A monumentally difficult conflict made excessively more confusing by the addition of religion.

I think there'll be a big change in Northern Ireland once the current crop of politicians fuck off. They're the ones holding the country back, IMO.

Tbh waiting for old people to die is occasionally the best way to make progress.

I'd always thought the republic was against reunification. So is it the other way round, or do they both not want it?
See why did I pretend I knew something about it.

There is advocates for and against on both sides, but the majority of opposition to reunification* comes from Protestants in the North as they'd sacrifice the majority they have to be a minority in a predominantly Catholic United Ireland.
*at least, this is what I was taught

It's not really part of the political conversation in the Republic so it's hard to say. I'd say if we were asked in a referendum then yeah, most of the country would be pro reunification. But it's definitely Northern Ireland's choice and as Will has already shown, the cast majority of people living in the North are happy with how things are. Economically it doesn't make sense for them to move, never mind all the political background.
Religion is just a mask for people's politics anyway. It doesn't complicate things any further, it's just another label

I live at the border so it does affect me a lot more than say someone way down south, have also done a lot of it for history in university. There are no easy solutions that's for sure. The only thing that is clear is that violence didn't work.
Republic would go for unification imo, romantic nationalism is still stronger than economic pragmatism among most of the public I think. But it wouldn't be the Republic's choice anyway, Republic has held the same stance for 100 years if anything it's fading with every passing year. As IG says, it's not part of the political conversation anymore, it's up to the people living there themselves.
In semi-related news, Ireland's GDP is apparently growing the fastest in the EU so we look less of an economic no-go country but still quite a bit off being a completely stable economy to rely on.

Pretty sad to see Glasgow last night. Will probably be hard to make progress so long as unionist twats like them are around.

Glad we said no, lets move on now. You can't expect 45% of the country to just stand down from their beliefs. The desire for Independence will remain there and I think the SNP might even be galvanized a bit by this. Labour has lost all credibility in Scotland. The Unionist parties have already broken their promise for new powers (see below) and we're only 2 days on from the fucking vote. This issue won't be dropped, let go or "moved on" from. And for the record I don't support any of these theories of fixing or any call for a revote. What I do support is the call for action to be taken over the blatant lies the UK Government told to gain No support.

Glad we said no, lets move on now. You can't expect 45% of the country to just stand down from their beliefs. 55% said no, whether the 45% want to argue their beliefs or not is irrelevant, the majority of people in Scotland dont want to break away from the UK. Thats more important than 45% of people voting yes. You had your vote and you lost it. Lets move on and try and make the country better for all of us.
