Have to think McIlroy's been robbed a bit there and his conflicting nationality has played a part in the vote. Can't really do much more in golf in one year than he did this year. Don't think nationality comes into it. It's possibly cost him a few votes, I've read quite a few comments boards and in each one it has been brought it up. Hamilton went around the track with a union jack, Rory obviously can't do that. Also see only two NI people have won the award, less votes obviously because of the small population. Golf isn't the top sport in the UK but is still a lot more popular than a lot of the sports that have won it before. McIlroy had the best UK golf year ever, probably the best European golf year ever. World Number 1 by miles, won both tours money list, two majors, Ryder Cup. I suppose at the end of the day he was probably miles ahead in second place but basically he came up against Formula One was the problem, the English love their F1.

God the McIlroy lot are sore losers. Go out and try and do what Hamilton does, just as talented as Rory.

That's such a shit argument though because no-one can do what McIlroy does either. Or none of us here can have a baby and win a medal at 40. The point of these awards is that you can't do what they do.

It surprises me how many people actually care about this award these days. It's not the Laureus Awards.

I've genuinely not even seen it mentioned and I hadn't even realised he'd selected (last I remember seeing was that him and McDowell were still trying to decide), idk if it's been a bigger story over there but not so much as a peep here. McIlroy was in to 1/14 before it was announced so it's not as if he didn't deserve it nor that he wasn't expected to win. As I said though if you think of the people watching, aren't they more likely to be F1 watches and more likely to be sat on a computer voting? I'd imagine the votes will be extremely close.

It surprises me how many people actually care about this award these days. It's more of a battle of the sports really. One fan of one sport belittling another one. When it's really barely possible to compare sporting achievement at all.

The point of these awards is that you can't do what they do. That's the point though, people are trying to belittle Hamilton's win because all he does is drive a car. If you use that logic to simplify F1, then it's gonna be used as a counter argument to simplify Golf and thus highlight the stupidity of said logic. Meanwhile, nobody bats an eyelid that a fucking dancing horse was one of the top 10.

Yeah it's the British Sports Personality of the Year so I really shouldn't care but as a big McIlroy fan and as a golf fan I obviously wanted him to win it. He should win the Irish Personality of the Year but could be shafted by Brian O'Driscoll sentimentality.

No one in the world is better than McIlroy at golf when he's on form. No one. The bloke is the best in the sport since Tiger Woods burst onto the scene and he has all the ability to go on and become the greatest player that ever lived.
He had the best year anyone has ever had in golf, dominating the majors and winning 3 points for Europe when they retained the Ryder Cup with ease. He won both the money lists with ease.

Nobody is doubting McIlroy's greatness though.
Jesus, more of a margin than I expected.

That's my point, they're both equally valid achievements and incomparable so all these golf fanboys going "weh weh you need to drive a golf cart quickly lolz" can piss off, absolutely nonsensical.

At the end of the day this is just a public vote popularity contest.
If you want a panel of reputable sports journalists and broadcasters to judge who's the best sports person this year is, go to the Laureus Awards
If you want a panel of the average casual sports fan working-class and middle-class family demographic to judge who's the best sports person this year is, go to this
