Yeah I'm positive it wasn't. But, as djed said, even if it was every member has a veto and there's no way Cyprus or Greece would agree anytime soon, let alone Britain. Wounds centuries old to resolve there.

I'm probably not going to end up voting, which is sad but like someone said earlier on, I just don't feel informed enough to vote knowledgeably on either side. I can't rifle through the media bullshit well enough to find logical and simple answers to questions about the realistic, not scare-mongering or propaganda, reasons and effects that staying/leaving will have. Again, that's really sad because I know that's what they intended to do, blanket information and keep knowledge-seeking people out of the know and appeal to the lowest common denominators of either side.
If I was to register a vote, I think it would be to stay, of both sides rhetoric, the patriotic little-Englander one offends me more, I'm one of the least patriotic people you'll probably meet, but at the same time, there might be legitimate good in coming out of the EU but in focusing on the xenophobia, those points haven't gotten through, at least not to me anyway.

For me it's about choosing the lesser of two evils.
As bad as the EU can be, as undemocratic as it may be, I have more fear for what a Conservative government with the likes of Johnson, Gove, Whittingdale, Patel and Duncan-Smith will seek to do. Especially with how Labour seems to be intent on self desctruction and is haemorrhaging supporting in the north because of their left leaning direction.

Liverpool_96 if you don't mind me asking and by all means choose to ignore me, but how does a descendant of an immigrant come to vote against future immigration? I'm genuinely interested rather than trying to be smart.

I just don't like the way the country is going. I don't know why really, I suppose my mother has strong views on it and it kinda rubs off on me. It's more to do with the fact that the government doesn't really look after it's own people with benefits and the like and how we get dictated things from Brussels. Britain used to be something now we're almost like a laughing stock. I believe in Brits being able to marry foreigners and then coming back here like but even then it needs to be monitored as a 70 year old woman was going to be marrying a 20 year old Tunisian until someone intervened and prevented it from happening. it's very hypocritical of me however it's something I feel strongly about and have proceeded to vote to leave. I doubt very much that we'll leave but hey ho. Did you watch Question Time a few weeks back? They were up in Aberdeen and I was in the audience, one of the guys down the front made some very good points about our own fishing industry - which is big up in the north east and how our fleet is getting destroyed whilst the EU fund Spain to fish right on our doorstep. Will try and find the link for you but the general consensus up here in Aberdeen is that the majority fancy us leaving.

Will try and find the link for you but the general consensus up here in Aberdeen is that the majority fancy us leaving. This reads like a local UKIP facebook page but I'll break it down bit by bit; If you don't like the way the country is going, you definitely need to vote in; what the Tories have been allowed to do so far will only be a drop in the water to what the far right dinosaurs of the party want to do when unrestricted by European staples such as the human rights act, equality at work etc... "Government doesn't really look after it's own people with benefits" - That's nothing to do with Europe and everything to do with the Conservative government. If you vote out, there'll be even less protection for people. "we get dictated things from Brussels." - The figure fluctuates depending on which side you listen to but I've seen between 7% - 50% of our laws being decided by the EU. Genuine question, what has been dictated to us to our detriment from Brussels? "Britain used to be something now we're a laughing stock" - Farcical point and classic little islander syndrome, aye we used to have an empire where we raped and pillaged and destroyed lands around the world, RULE BRITANNIA. We're far from a laughing stock, if anything European countries are envious of us for our strong currency, relatively low unemployment rate, who's laughing at us? "70 year old woman was getting married to a 20 year old Tunisian" - That's more to do with her own fucking stupidity, but still, if these dense women weren't such gullible fools then Heat and Hello magazines wouldn't exist. "fishing industry, Spain etc..." - Fishing industry is a good example of issues within the EU and how subsidies don't always help resolve issues (Give this a read if you're interested in how the Spanish fishing fleet is up shit creek even though it's the biggest reciever of subsidies in the EU; www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/10/02/spain-fishing-subsidies-eu-fishermen_n_989613.html), however if we left the EU what would change? Spain would still recieve subsidies, would still be allowed to fish in the waters they currently do as they're European waters (we can't just claim them as our own unless we fancy causing major disagreements), and these same subsidies have been vital to farmers within the UK or renewable energy providers.

I appreciate the reply my man. You raise some good points and to be honest I obviously don't know much about it. However it does have something to do with Europe regarding benefits when we have Eastern Europeans over here making a mug of the benefits system and sending payouts home or living in properties at the taxpayers expense in Britain. I will read into that link you provided. I'll follow this thread closely like but I'm not going to change my mind, I'm probably ignorant but I just fancy change and think we could do just as well without having to be a part of the EU. They need us more than we need them if you consider how much we spend on their products yet our output to them isn't that high.

They need us more than we need them if you consider how much we spend on their products yet our output to them isn't that high. How are they making a mug of the benefits system? They can't just rock up and claim benefits for life; www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/benefits-for-non-uk-nationals-do-i-qualifyYes, they are elligible for some benefits but it depends on their immigration status and employment (or lack of) status. There's also multiple clauses in place to try and prevent this from being the case; a three month and six month review if on job seekers to see if there's actually a reasonable prospect of employment. If someone is recieving job seekers allowance they can't claim housing benefits. There's an image painted that all these immigrants are queueing up at Calais to get to us because we hand out money freely; no, it's easier to find work here, especially the sort of cash in hand jobs they're after. "They need us more than we need them" - You'd be surprised, just because we export more than we import currently doesn't mean that will continue; if anything, if we screw over the EU by leaving there's every chance they'll just shut up shop and start buying the goods we sell from elsewhere. And, frankly, give me an EU migrant coming over here and working to claim benefits over a homegrown single mum who only had a kid to get a council house and is whinging about all those foreigners taking all those jobs she's never applied for.

Worker's rights are shit because of the EU. Worker's right will be even worse if we're not in the EU. Really wish more media time would be spent on the valid left wing arguments against the EU, of which there are several, because as it is me voting to leave acts as a mandate for Boris and that lot's arguments with whom I completely disagree.
I hate the level to which the EU is pro-business, the way it attacks union and worker's rights and the way it makes trade deals far outside of any democratic sphere.
The EU is so incredibly pro-business it's untrue, the way many liberals have twisted it to being a positive entity for the working class is ridiculous. It's inherently not good for the workers. Unfortunately the Tories are even more anti-worker and so any leave win will simply lead to a further degradation of rights and a further slip to the right. Equally though a referendum will likely not come again for a generation and staying in will mean a pro-worker's government is handcuffed.

yeah, I don't know much about it whatsoever and tbh at my age I'm not entirely fussed about what goes on. at your age you should be colossally fussed about it. Aul Nora from 62b is voting Leave because she doesn't trust the new Polish postman and if the economy ends up down shit creek then she's not fussed cos she's only got 3 more years of state pension before she packs up for good, but we're stuck with whatever happens here for pretty much the entirety of our working lives and if that doesn't just terrify you enough to properly look into both arguments then you're better to not vote at all.
