I've kept the title quite open so that once any discussion dies down, this thread can be used in the future to post funny/interesting youtube videos or whatever but the reason I'm opening it is to strike up a discussion about youtubers/vloggers.
Until very recently, I had only a vague concept of how much of a phenomenon it actually was among young people today, I had heard briefly in passing a name like 'Zoella', 'Pewdiepie' and 'KSI' but I didn't know these were internet personalities or 'celebrities' in that they could monetize their internet popularity and create somewhat of a brand for themselves.
Anyway, over the summer while watching the Olympics, I was remisicing how me and my mates used to play London 2012, I ended up searching on youtube for videos of people playing on it on a whim and came across some channel called 'Zerka'. I thought it was great, 3 or 4 lads who got together regularly and played London 2012, it reminded me of the sort of 'banter' I'd have when I used to play these games and stuff and I got hooked on watching them and even rooting for certain ones to win the games and stuff.
I started looking in the 'other uploads by this user' section and found the same group played other games, I ended up watching some Skate 3 videos and a few GTA videos - around this point I noticed one regular user 'JJ' was occasionally referred to as 'KSI', which is a name I have heard of, and briefly know he's linked with making FIFA videos and obsesses about Emile Heskey, at this point I started to realise I was actually watching people who were involved in this vlogging movement rather than just some randoms uploading video game commentary with their mates. Further to this I learnt that they're actually a group of lads in their early 20s who all have their own vlogs and collectively refer to themselves as 'The Sidemen'.
I kinda want to sneer at the whole idea, but I can't deny that they actually market themselves really well and I can see why they have a big fanbase. I've branched out into watching them play other games like 'Garry's Mod' and 'Cards against Humanity' which lets them play off certain personality traits and create caricatures of themselves. Already said it once but it's really good branding. Most lads probably grew up and at one point or another formed a group of mates that can identify personalities with at least one of the sidemen characters and did/do stuff like they do, rip the piss out of each other, play video games, talk about football & girls etc.
I don't know if I feel silly for being dragged into liking these sort of videos in my mid-20s, and I've certainly no urge to go out and find a load of other vloggers to follow or anything, but whenever I have some free time and I'm on the internet, I do find myself searching through their back catalogue to watch them play video games, which if you told me I'd be doing that a month ago I'd have laughed at you. Part of me also likes it because I think fair play, I don't have the video editing skills that these lads obviously have but apart from that, I could have easily been making these videos 5 years ago with lads I knew and they've managed to monetize something very common among most 16-24 years old and turn it into making a pretty good living for themselves by having fun with your mates.
What do people think about youtubers/vloggers and that whole circle?
Is there someone you watch?
Am I considered a cunt among normal people for liking these videos?
Edit: I just want to double down on stressing I've not watched any FIFA videos and barely any GTA ones as they seemed like the most cunty things to watch
