Here's my view on the Chelsea situation:
1) Gary Cahill is the King of all the nonces. Seriously, for the past 2 and a half years I've been telling anybody who will listen that he's a fucking liability. He was never someone who was going to be a star defender, and a guy to build around ala JT. He started well, and got progressively worse. Exactly the same thing he got caught with a couple of weeks ago too, and yes that was a foul but still you look at the movement and question it. Turning your back on a striker that's closing you down so you're clueless to where he is, is just poor defending. He doesn't look sound and assured, he looks nervous and like without someone telling him what to do and when to do it that he doesn't have a fucking clue as to what he is actually doing.
2) Luiz at the moment is set up to fail. He wasn't bought to be the stand out rock at the back, and shut down every attack. He was bought to be the one to set up attacks from the back, and to play through. Without question Conte is expecting Matic, Kante, Cahill and our fullbacks to cover. If he pushes forward a little the expectation being Kante or Matic will drop. He makes mistakes, but he isn't as laughable as everybody says. Just when you've fallen apart defensively it's easy to go for the easy option of blame. Yesterday was actually down to Cahill and Hazard when it came to poor defending mistakes that cost us.
3) Matic is showing why we didn't keep him, and we should not be playing him. Last year his was terrible, this year he has been equally as bad. He started well for us, and has completely dropped off. He should not be starting, and at this moment in time I'm completely fine with selling him in Jan. Off you pop fuck face.
4) Conte has the system in mind he wants to use, but doesn't have the players for it yet. He clearly wants to use a 3-4-2-1. I fully expect the back 3 he wants is Zouma, JT and Luiz. With Alonso and Azp as wing backs. It's the system he's had most success with, and right now he's caught between 4-1-4-1 and switching to 4-4-2 when it's going wrong. It's unfortunate that we've had the injuries we have, but it exposes the bigger problem of a lack of players that can fit in the system he actually wants to use.
5) This is what happens when a board doesn't back your first choice transfer targets, Nainngolan was wanted ahead of Kante. Rodriguez was wanted ahead of Alonso, and Koulibaly was wanted ahead of Luiz. The board didn't back him though, and he got stuck with players he clearly didn't think were top picks for the system he wanted. You can't blame a manager, when the board wont give you the chance to set up the team the way you want.
6) It's now 3 managers this defence hasn't worked for, clearly the issue isn't the system or how it's being managed. It's more a question of ability and confidence. Ivanovic has lost the ability he had, and Cahill has too. As a result the team as a whole look so nervous when any team is attacking, and it leads to us making our own mistakes. Like yesterday, all three goals were fairly easy to prevent had we been on the ball.
Ultimately I don't see how we can possibly hope to challenge on any front when we have these type of issues. At the moment as great as Roman and the board have been for the club, they're standing in the way of us actually being able to take a step forward by limiting the freedom managers have in bringing who they want in. Obviously we don't want to spend like crazy like we used to do, but if a manager says 'this is who we need for my system to work' you have to accept that and say okay we'll get x amount of your first picks, and see how you go with it. Cahill, Ivanovic, Matic, and Courtois are dead in the water. The word is Zouma is back in full time training as of this week, and right now the focus has to be on training this system, and implementing it as soon as possible, which will likely be the first game after the international break. Top 4, and a domestic cup have to be our aim this season.

I'm starting to feel more and more like that Atlético defence is just that good because Courtois honestly isn't anything special.

I have not seen much wrong with Courtois other than he has no confidence in his defence. Cahill was embarrassing having a go at Courtois for not being speedy gonzalez to gather the ball. If he actually attempted to get the ball, it'd turn out much worse. Also, I'd not want to take a chance on another keeper although Begovic is a decent alternative.
I'm gonna defend Matic here. He was one of the few player from yesterday, constantly looking to get the ball forward or to the wings. He should have got that chance out for Costa, though. Kante was caught with Ivanovic and Cahill passing it back and being in bad positions, and Fabregas was anonymous.
We need a completely new defence. Get Zouma ready, recall Christensen who's apparently amazing now, buy Rugani or whoever young italian defender Conte would bond with, and play that system he wants. Strip Ivanovic of his vice-captaincy or whatever the hell he is and play Alonso ahead of him. Were we actually linked to Rodriguez?
I never felt this about our players, but I actually think i bear a bit of hate for Ivanovic. It's depressing seeing his decline.

I am genuinely struggling to remember a time when Cahill wasn't at best a bit ropey for Chelsea
