I was laughing at the difference between the Italian and UK governments approaches this morning. The Italian government have taken this very seriously and have looked after their people, even suspending mortgage payments until it's all sorted. The UK government? Wash your hands and btw we've slashed interest rates because the economy! Yeah I'm sure that'll help 85 year old Deidre who's on her last legs and will probably die if she catches corona, but at least she can be happy knowing that the economy is sound. She will have super clean hands when she kicks the bucket as well.

It's so fishy. It's almost like the Govt here are trying to keep up appearances. Italy have committed to testing 10,000 a day, the USA have gone over 1,000 positives in a week and we're somehow only sat on 450 odd from 27k tests?
lmao only just seen the above post. That's criminal

I'd say they just don't get it do they? But I think they do get it, they're purposely trying to play it down instead of you know, fucking helping people.

We've just had our first death in Ireland, and I think we only have 34 cases confirmed or something along those lines. I keep seeing the buzzword being "containment phase" just now.
I'm still a little confused because they've cancelled all the Paddy's Day festivities but the GAA matches are all still going ahead as far as I know, and there'd be significant crowds at quite a few of those. We're playing on Saturday and I'd expect at least 8k at it but haven't seen a whisper of the matches being postponed.

They were testing way way more people than other European countries way earlier, I think their numbers will be replicated across the continent but other places just aren't testing as much. Italy have an ageing population as well so I suppose they'd be very conscious of that. Like I cannot believe there wasn't even a consideration of cancelling Cheltenham. I mean I can (££££££££) but jesus

I mean there is a massive social care crisis where we don't have enough money to look after the key demographic who are most at danger from this...

The amount of emails we've had at work about washing our hands does make me wonder how many people haven't been doing that before though.

I saw an article about true cases vs official cases, extrapolating data from Wuhan and China as a whole. I think it's pretty risky to apply standard data models to this but the figures are pretty scary, we've had 1 death in Ireland and this data model implies that that means there are likely 900 cases here rather than the 43 reported. Even if it's only half right, that's still 10 times higher than the official figure.
Italian PFA were calling for all football to be suspended in Italy as well, the Rugani case now will surely accelerate that. I just don't see how the Euros get played at this rate, the FAs will be looking to suspend their leagues and will play them off whenever things calm down. The Olympics are at risk ffs.
