Is it just me who see's this as fucking retarded? They're saying "we're 4 weeks behind Italy" - so why are we just waiting till it gets worse before introducing "social distancing"? Surely the sooner you implement those measures the fewer infections, and fewer deaths, you get, no?

so glaringly obvious that they're looking at this from an economic standpoint.

This dude just said 80% of the population will be infected and there's a 1% mortality rate. He just said 531,520 are going to die without saying it.

Just got the news that my bosses boss doesn't think we'll have school and uni closures for at least 2 more weeks based on the speech given.
Essentially the plan is to LET people get it to a fairly high number and then enter the mitigation stage to flatten out the hump. Early quarantining means the people who will survive it won't get it before the quarantine and will then just get it and spread it once quarantining's finished. Which is why Boris is coming out saying people will die, cause the plan is kinda to let them for a bit.
Reading between the lines almost all of us will get it and this is the best way to average out the number of us with it at any one time.
Either our scientist's are miles ahead of anyone else's and we'll only know in about 2 months time or we just MAJORLY fucked up. Either way our cases are gonna grow a lot faster than those taking the actions now and pressure will mount incredibly quickly to take those actions whether or not it's the right decision.

I do actually think they're following what they think is the best course of action - I still find the sports and mass gatherings thing extremely odd and I'd be surprised if the league didn't take the initiative and postpone themselves.
And also, having just come back from the shop where there's no bog roll, pasta, rice, soap or ibuprofen, imagine the panic if he had come out and admitted how many people were likely to die. And it is a valid point that if he gets everyone to quarantine now, before we're at the known peak, they may not do so later when it's essential.
Loathe to sound like I'm defending Boris but I think beyond the sports events and mass gatherings, and knowing how utterly fucking moronic the general public can be, I reckon they've just about got it right.

Response on all levels has just been fucking awful. This country doesn’t half to arrogant in the face of the threat of massive losses of life. Decent chance that some of us will lose at the very least one grandparent over the next few weeks or months and yet, here we all are, going into work every day. I work in a building with over 2500 people and come into contact with a decent 40-50 of them daily. It’s a farce.

But surely quarantining now is the way to reduce that peak, not wait for the peak then quarantine? I wish they had advised people to work from home if possible too, as the Execs at my work have shown a reluctance to diverge from the governments advice. I (and a lot of people in my office) can easily do my job remotely yet they are hesitant to allow it because of how it looks to others in the business. So I have to put myself on the London Underground twice a day because they don't want to upset others? I had a serious respiratory tract infection in November and fuck going through anything like that again. Given my last day of work is on Thursday I'm considering just working from home anyway, and if they're upset it's not exactly a huge deal.

Can only assume they think that it will approach it's peak in the next few weeks and that's the ideal time to quarantine people so that it coincides. How they've come to that conclusion I don't quite know but at a guess it's a mixture of massively expanding the testing volumes and factoring in the potential of a 3 week incubation period.

I'm about to go to a gig #yolo #prayforMaski
Also, looking at the state of this pub this has not lessened Newcastle residents willingness to drink on a Thursday.
