I would drop Rice who has basically gone completely unnoticed so far because he's done absolutely nothing and bring in Henderson if fit, or Bellingham if not.
Don't care about the back five but if pushed I'd want Trippier at right back.
I'd probably stick with Mount, and then go Sancho and Saka on the wings with Kane up front. Rotation for me trump's trying to force players into form by sticking with Sterling/Foden who can always come on off the bench. The main thing we've been missing especially with Kane dropping deep is runs in behind. Sterling tried it but had to keep dropping too. Saka and Sancho can run in behind but can also dribble past players too.

Pickford Trippier Stones Mings Shaw Rice Bellingham Sancho Foden Grealish Kane Stop fucking around Genuinely what has Rice done to justify starting over Phillips? I wouldn't mind that line up with that swap but who would play the 10 role? You've got three players who all like to play out wide.

Rice is a better holding mid than Phillips. He was class first game but both of them were pretty much irrelevant in the Scotland match. Its pretty much personal preference for me, either of them are fine as long as they arent together.
I wouldnt have an out and out no10, we all know Kane drops back into that role. I'd have Sancho pretty much playing as a 2nd striker and making the runs in behind to the space that Kane leaves. Grealish and Foden will have free reign to pick up space as and where they find it. The front 4 are all pretty interchangable with that formation, they all make runs behind, drop deep, go wide and find a pass. 4-2-3-1 wouldnt be a rigid formation at all.

I think thats why we struggle to create much with Mount/Kane playing together. Kane drops back into Mounts space, which makes him move out wide and then we end up with no one getting into the box.
We try so hard to make players play a different way to how they do in club football. Kane is never going to work being told to play as a traditional no9 on the last defender. It isnt his game and its genuinely ridiculous to make him try and play it. Let him drop deep, get the wingers moving into the spaces he creates and get some movement into the play. Everyone is just stood still waiting for passes and its the most boring, frustrating shit possible to watch. Especially when you watch Kane for Spurs and hes central to 95% of their attacking moves through his movement of dropping and finding Son with the overlapping runs.

I agree with everything you’ve said there Stu about not making players play in a way different to what they’re best at, but doesn’t that make Grealish and Sancho completely incompatible to playing with Kane? Both of them aren’t blessed with loads of pace, they’re much better on ball than they are off ball so they’d all be occupying the same area about 30 yards from goal.
England for me don’t have many players who will just run in behind. Even the quickest with the likes of Rashford and Sterling have become so used to how their clubs play, on the counter in Rashford’s case and possession dominant operating in tight spaces and relying on acceleration rather than pure pace, that they don’t work well alongside Kane.
I don’t like Kane and I don’t try to hide it but my perspective on him for England is neutral and as much as he is a world class centre forward I think in so many cases you’re cutting your nose off if you try to build your team around him. England should build their team around their width. It’s arguably where all of their best players are, from the full backs to the likes of Grealish and Sancho. Look at the players they have at club level. Functional midfielders and quick, mobile strikers. There’s no threat in behind from England at all and Calvert-Lewin can provide them that I think. They don’t need their striker and best player to be played out of the game because there’s no way to force him into your style of play. Play him as a 10 by all means but he’s ineffective in a tournament as the 9.

That starting 11 is so bad lool
Cant play Sancho cos hes inexperienced but Saka can play? Cool.
Rice and Phillips again? Cant wait for the explosive runs and forward thinking passing tonight.

Also there is literally zero argument where we build an England squad that doesnt include using our first world class striker since an 18 year old Wayne Rooney.
There is no building a team around anyone else if it needs Calvert fucking Lewin to be the main striker, thats ridiculous.

Then in that case enjoy watching England do the same thing at every tournament until the end of time.
The manager is a massive shithouse as well.

Expect Maguire to drop a clanger.

England always beat teams like this 2-0. It’s how they got there. Get the Scotland game on instead!
