Those players who cameoed in a stand-out performance or made a small but important contribution to the team and eventually faded away into obscurity.
Federico Macheda
Scored a VERY important goal vs Villa that put us back on track to win the 08/09 title, as well as slightly less important goal vs Sunderland which did almost the same thing but everyone remembers the former instance etc etc... after that on the fringes of Utd's first team, small cameos here and there, now spending his time out of loan at Doncaster Rovers after failing to make an impact on loan in Italy and Germany.

Mbulelo Mabizela scored an amazing goal for us and then vanished into the aether.
Erik Edman scored an amazing goal for us and then vanished into the aether.
David Bentley scored an amazing goal for us and then took £60k from us for the next four years.

Erik Edman scored an amazing goal for us and then vanished into the aether. Against Liverpool? One of my favourite goals ever. Though I thought he was a regular for Spurs for a few years? Heartbreakingly Elano was a flash in the pan with a few months of sizzle afterwards but never the same as when he first arrived on the scene. Micah is a little like that too, not quite on Macheda's level but he looked for all the world like a future world-class RB or even centre back but ehhhhh....

I would say Neil Mellor he's retired, always going to remember that goal against Arsenal and his contribution against Olympiakos but after his injuries never quite made it back into the first team, but I don't think playing in the championship half of his career amounts to obscurity. Always sad to see footballers retire due to injury.

Disappointingly Arshavin was a bit of a flash in the pan, really good for about 2 years at most but what a flash he was in 2008, was unbelievable at times in the Europa League and then consequently the Euros.

Amr Zaki for sure. Amazing half of a season for Wigan and then basically nothing else.

John Utaka, had 3 maybe 4 good games for us then did nothing until he left for Montpellier and won fucking Ligue 1 with them.

I'm going with robin van persie who will score a decent goal every couple of months and is then forgotten about until it happens again.

Wonder goals against Arsenal and Spurs and a good one against Fulham on his debut. His full career was slightly flash in the pan to be fair. Started with great promise which lead to Barcelona signing him for £20m, after a mixture of not living up to the hype and falling out with their manage he ends up on loan at Benfica. Ends up playing quite well there and Benfica take the gamble on him paying £15m. He won Benfica player of the year two seasons running before returning back to Cruzeiro due to family problems.
After sorting things out (average enough season at Cruzeiro) he left for Europe again this time to Man City, he started well scoring a few goals then soon fizzled out and to my recollection didn't start a lot towards the second half of that season thus meaning he was released. Then we took the punt on him, he scored our first ever Premiership goal (Fulham) went on to score something like 7 out of his 8 goals in the first half of the season then fizzled out again. Before doing the same the following season (started with 4 in his first 7 games) then ended up a free agent. Then he fucked off to the MLS for a season, then back to Brazil.
Just always seemed knackered by time we hit December onwards haha.

Can think of a few Rangers players who looked great as youngsters but then didn't do much after.
John Fleck being the prime example. Stood out at youth level above every other player. Was tipped to be Scotlands Wayne Rooney. Talk of United and Chelsea signing him. Broke into the Rangers team for a couple of months, talk of him getting called up into the Scotland squad. I imagine the pressure on him was far too much, and i don't think he had a great attitude. Was getting continually played out of position at Rangers though, and by the sounds of things, he has found decent form at Coventry. But really his career should have been much better by now.

I actually completely forgot he is the youngest player to play in a British Cup final. Came on with minutes to go and he nearly scored. The potential and hype he had was unreal. Fuck.

I don't think he ever actually flashed but in terms of unfulfilled hype then Freddy Adu trumps everyone ever.
