I'd love to see what Rodgers would do with the England team. But, I'm not English, so fuck that.

It's neither tongue in cheek nor knee jerk. I didn't think Hodgson was right when he was hired, after the euros, throughout qualification or right now. But that's my opinion of him as a coach in general. Right now there is a different point. There is a group of exciting young players there than need developing. Much like Germany 4 years ago. Is Hodgson the right man to do that? Regardless of his record at this World Cup and beforehand, absolutely not. You're a Liverpool fan and therefore hate Hodgson, opinion is invalid. A lot of this thread is knee jerky (a delicacy in Mexico) but there are some good points. Didn't think Hodgson was up to it when he was hired, but at least he's picked a more adventurous team than anyone since Sven. I know you've (quite rightly) pointed out Holland are in a transitional stage and getting out of the group is (I don't think it's just us) somewhat surprising. England are the same because of the squad choice from him. Not a massively amazing tactician but if nowt else, he's took a bullet in not taking/playing the Old Guard (no matter if you think they should have played). And that's a huge step for England. As said in previous thread tho, it's not massively unlikely now. Italy win by 2 tomorrow then (assuming Italy win 3 of 3) then England just need a win. Not beyong even Woy's weach

I'll give it a crack.
My theory is if we don't beat Costa Rica, then I just need to get us to an international tournament. Then I can't do worse than 0 wins and 3 losses. Jaffers 4 England.

If Woy gets the boot England really have to go looking at foreign options.

Fuck having to have an English manager, a lot of other countries with similar talent pools to us go for foreigners so why not us? Sven wasn't a disaster, Capello was because he couldn't be arsed to even learn the fucking language so he can piss off.

I would plod on with Roy, but only because we have zero credible candidates to replace him.

I would plod on with Roy, but only because we have zero credible candidates to replace him. Exactly, there's not one viable alternative. Why would any top manager take the England job when its a no win situation.

Do you know what, I don't think he deserves to be sacked but I do think it's the perfect time for him to go. If he leaves and the next manager comes along and has the ability to make these talented youngsters a proper team we may well look back and say Roy Hodgson was the turning point for England. If he stays we may well end up thinking what could have been.
I know that sounds weird but it's the first time a manager has had the balls to turn to the youth and leave out the names that people usually take.

Look at the 2012 squad, it's worlds apart.
He could easily have called up the likes of Barry, Defoe, Cole and even tried to get Terry out of retirement but he never. Also you talk about prominent roles, Milner and Lampard had that at Euro 2012 and thankfully not this time around.
Even Scott Parker was a starter at Euro 2012 ffs.

Wouldn't fire him, but let him walk with his pride intact.
Think he's taken us as far as he could, he's shifted the side up well and brought in 5/6 players who could genuinely become the spine of the side for many years to come, but I don't see him being the man to lead that generation into future tournaments. Considering he's taken us through a transitional period of bleeding in new players into the team, he's stuck in the middle of having the old guard playing, and completely switching the team around. Mixing in youth with experience takes time to create, and even more time to create successfully, but as a few have pointed out, he's at an age where he probably couldn't finish what he started, and if we brought in a new manager halfway through that period it could fuck everything up royally.
I don't even think he's a bad manager. His tactics have sometimes been very questionable, but his team selections have given off positive vibes looking into the future, as shown by the risks he's taken with some of his squad selections. Just think, if it wasn't for that one, very lucky, goal for Suarez, we probably wouldn't be having this debate. He's a solid manager, and does deserve his chance to finish up bringing in his own squad, but at the same time, I'd love to see somebody else step in and lead the team forward.
Question is, who?

I think he deserves until Euro 2016. Our younger players still aren't there yet, and Roy's bringing them through nicely. I don't think more upheaval will be good for the side. Think he got it a little bit wrong vs Uruguay, but he's doing the right things on the whole.
Or we should just appoint Bielsa.

Sven and Capello were 'world class' at the time of their appointments. Sven anyway was flavour of the month after winning Serie A with Lazio. Capello had an unbelievable Cv and won the league in Spain just beforehand.

Also Sven did a good job for England, 3 quarters two lost on penalties, one lost to the eventual winners. Unfortunately he managed at a time when the PL was coming into its own as a major league and the hype drive was bigger than ever and England were expected to win WCs. At least with a few humbling performances afterwards the hype went down a bit and there were more realistic expectations.
You could say England were around the top 5 in the world around then, very consistent just couldn't take penalties as usual.
