In hindsight Sven was a pretty good manager for England. He had some off-field issues but who doesn't like a shag.

We could have easily reached a semi final in 02, our team was good enough.

We could have easily reached a semi final in 02, our team was good enough. us and brazil were easily the two best teams left by the quarters, germany's run to the final was piss poor. but again, we fucked ourselves in that scenario by not just winning our group in the first place

We were also very unfortunate not to make the final of Euro 2004. why? we went out in the quarters? but that game was typical england, we started off brilliantly, had a little setback with rooney going off then completely sat back, allowed the portuguese pressure to mount, and eventually it told. same old story in the end, glorious defeat

Hodgson basically picked all the players that you wanted to bring so I don't think you could have changed much personnel-wise. Tactically, could have played three in midfield perhaps but not sure who you would have brought in that would have made the difference. So goes back to the fact that you're not really good enough at the moment.
I thought England did play well against Italy and they are a good side despite their horror show against Costa Rica. Could have easily gotten a result in both games but just fell a bit short. You're just an average international side and have been since around 2006.

What England clearly needs is to move to my patented 5-0-5 formation with five defenders and five forwards. Who needs midfielders anyway?

I cant see England winning anything in the next ten years, or even getting far enough in a tournament for the media and fans to be happy and proud of their efforts. Hell twenty years is probably more accurate.
It's not a dismissive point regarding how long it's been and the fact that I wouldnt want them to win anyway. It's basically because the young talent England has that you could actually say is up there with the best the rest of the world has to offer is in wingers and attacking midfielders. Too many Gascoignes and Barnes' and not enough Shearers, Linekers, Adams', Campbells, Inces etc. etc. etc.
It also falls down to the amount of English players in the top divisions of Europe. There's fuck all of them and they're all in England. And to further that point, if you had to pick a 23 man Premier League All-Star team, how many of Englands world cup squad would you pick? I'd only put Hart, Baines & Gerrard in it and two of them probably wouldnt make the first XI. In most major leagues in Europe, they'd be full of home grown players and that is a major problem England need to address. Just dont go down the B-League route ffs.

He's the manager, it's on his head if he doesn't pick the right players. People might have wanted Baines but it's job to realise things like Rooney probably isn't the best cover for an attacking full-back.
