So we're in the all too familiar position of a disappointing England defeat from a major tournament. Yet again we've been outplayed and outmanoeuvred by teams that pre-match, a lot of people were predicting us to win against. Then with Costa Rica, the minnows of the group, completely outplaying and making Italy and Uruguay look completely average, our results and performances look even worse. We have moved on from Euro 2012, but still look like a nation way behind the curve, both technically and tactically. So where do we go from here? Who should come in after the tournament? Who do we want to see out the squad? What needs to be done to improve us? Gary Lineker speaks a ton of sense here for me: www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/27960776. Mentioning Rooney and Gerrard specifically, 2 players who are undoubtedly brilliantly talented, but seem to be unable to alter their game to fit into a system at this level.

One point I've not really seen mentioned is that a huge core of that side were Liverpool players, after being so close to winning the PL title and bottling it at the end, I wonder how drained they were. They can say they put it out of their mind but it can't have been easy and when you consider Johnson/Gerrard/Henderson/Sterling/Sturridge were all major parts of that squad it can't have been easy to walk into a World Cup, had they come off a PL title win, I wonder if England would have performed differently.
There were flashes of quality in that England side but ultimately they were rusty and 2nd best to almost everything. You could argue Jagielka and Baines were weak links not good enough to play at that level but I don't think they were the reason we lost games, Italy, and certainly Uruguay have weaker players than them, their better players performed better than our better players and all those 50/50 battles we seemed to be 2nd best in. The mental fatigue of coming off a season of disappointment for the 5 LFC players (Welbeck/Rooney also had a disappointing seasons - add the pressure on Rooney to perform) and I think in hindsight, it was all a recipie for a flat World Cup with a bunch of players burnt out and not mentally strong enough to get through close encounters.

Focus on youngsters yet average age of the sides were 27.
Too much respect for our opposition (letting Italy run rings around us), which seems to mean too little belief in ourselves. Costa Rica went at Uruguay and Italy for the win and they got it.
But most importantly we're missing the point again. The issue isn't young players - players who are truly good enough and truly determined enough will find a way through, be it at Chelsea or Chelmsford. It's the managers they're under that's an issue. I said this a few days ago - there really hasn't been a truly great English manager since Robson, just variations on dodgy (Redknapp) and decent (Hodgson). The issue is coaching, and it's something we need to address. It really doesn't matter who comes through the ranks if they're then put in the hands of an unimaginative hapless nice guy. No offence Roy.
This stat is still telling.

Nah it's cause they didn't have Suarez.

It's also because Roy hasn't the first clue on how to implement the style of football they had been thriving in.

And the fact Gerrard hasn't had a good game for England since we beat Germany 5-1

I thought this thread was just going to be videos of England's World Cup failings. Bit disappointed tbh.

There'd be a thread of Scotland's World Cup failings but they're never there to begin with.

Why don't Wales, Scotland, England and Northern Ireland have just one United Kingdom football squad? It would improve their chances of actually putting together a quality side.

Why would we want to be stuck in the same team as those bottlers?

Would that not just be Bale and Ramsey in the current England squad?
