Ireland have had players like Kevin Maggs, Gordon D'Arcy and Girvan Dempsey as mainstays for a number of years so we can't go out calling other teams boring.
say what you want about England but there's no way they lack star power or are boring.

Oooh, good topic. Was thinking about this not long ago because I definitely don't think football would be near my number #1 anymore and that's not even trying to be controversial, don't enjoy it anywhere near as much as I used to. 1. Tennis 2. Poker 3. Football 4. Wrestling and/or UFC if you're not having wrestling (WWE) as a sport 5. Golf or F1 (when Hamilton's not winning) *Olympics as a 2 week period of all sport would be #1, I'll watch anything when it comes to the olympics and fucking love it all* No interest in Cricket, I'll sometimes mildly get into a good Ashes series but that's it, no interest at all in Rugby Union, a vauge interest in Rugby League, no interest in NFL or any other American sports although I think if I had regular access and a stronger knowledge of NHL I'd quite enjoy that. I also quite enjoy watching the X-Games but would never bother to catch it live, some good stuff on youtube though. Used to like snooker but I enjoy playing it more than watching it. Can't be doing with darts or horse racing.

I accept it's pushing the limits of being a sport but if chess is considered a sport (and it is) I'm having poker!!
Plus I would say there is a definite physical aspect to poker, tournament sessions are generally 10-14 hours a day. There's a mental and physical stamina endurance there...(granted it's not cycling up a fuck off hill)
But it has global competitions running worldwide all year round with a big olympics style blow off in the summer. Gets major coverage on ESPN. It has a professional network of players who practice & study to become better.

It is an interesting question though, what makes sport, sport?
Is it the physical nature?
Is it the competition based element?
Is it the marketability?
To me, regardless of what the official definition of sport is, in my mindset 'sport' requires some sort of competition and marketability aspect. Like I wouldn't class yoga as a sport, I'd just say it was exercise.
Wrestling is an interesting one too because it's faked competition, but it requires world class physical capabilities.
I'd say there are some merits to arguing video gaming on an elite competition based sort of level is a sport - especially if they capitalize on it and start to televise/stream it (they might already do this, I'm really not a big video game person so I have no clue) - I'd argue there's as much physical excursion playing video games for a few hours than there is sitting on a boat for a few hours fishing - which I think is generally considered a sport...
There seems to be a venn diagram forming between Games - Sport - Exercise.

@mikecfc wrestling (WWE) has a pre-determined result and thus isn't a sport.
Chess is only classed as a sport because it allows it to receive funding from Sport England. Hence why Bridge was pushing to be included as a sport.
It's not, though. It's a card game. Just as poker is.

Wrestling is closer to Eastenders than it is to any sport.
1. Football 2=. NFL 2=. NHL 3. Cricket 4. F1/Rally 5. Golf
Also watch the auld gaelic games, the big tennis tournaments, winter & summer olympics/world champs, big darts over christmas, snooker, boxing when it looks like it's gonna be good and of course I sit watching bowls on BBC2 with my remote in hand saying "I'll change it in a second".
My NFL viewing has waned over the past few years, probably to do with the Bears getting worse and worse, I used to watch all the games on sky and sit through the highlights of the rest. I still watch quite a lot of it but it's the depth of knowledge I've started to lose. I used to know about rookies and prospects, now I aint got a clue, I just watch it to be entertained.
NHL viewing grows year on year with me, have always enjoyed it and it gets easier and easier to see thanks to the internet. Truly awesome sport.
Watch a lot of Cricket in the summer as it's everything else's off season and I'm one of those oddballs that can sit and watch David Gower and co. chat for three hours while it's raining.
Will watch F1 generally if there's nothing else better on as it's nowhere near as good as it used to be when I were a nipper and truly loved it. Still keep up with the WRC and other rally series thanks mainly to the internet.
Probably watch more golf than some other sports, but this is favourites.

Sport defined as 'an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.'
Some people question golf on the physical exertion thing but while there's no running at least it involves 20-30 fairly athletic, flexible swings a round at the top level to compete. Darts and snooker not so much but arguable. But I don't think that poker or chess could pass the physical exertion test if it would fit the rest of the criteria. It's not even like the way that you place the card or the chess piece, you could argue that darts and snooker rely on the style of a physical action.

I think we did this in GCSE PE or in my Sports BTEC in College. Basically no one was any closer to determining what is and isn't a sport at the end.

There are rugby players and NFL players of a similar build to Phil Taylor. Golfers too.

Aye but sumo wrestling is a sport and they wouldn't be able to run 30 yards lest their nappy falls down.
