Tbf I'd have thought it'd be right up Cashis' street, what with all that love thy neighbour (and their neighbour, and their neighbours neighbour) talk. Not so sure it's meant to be taken as literally as he does mind. Alas, I feel like I'd be sent to the burning depths of hell for what I do. I ended up watching that debate on Catholic Priests I mentioned in an earlier post and wow, it's clear to see why it's so common in their cult. One of the guest speakers who was a Catholic was coming out with some positively frightening comments re. the lack of responsibility their church has to weed these people out.

I'm a Christian and honestly I think all the half arsed comments you are getting is because you seem to be coming from a place of such rage. I hope you understand that's an observation rather than a dig. I get the thing against organised religion as it's been a used and manipulated to the will of those in power. But in today's world there are surely more prevalent issues, particularly in this country. Media, money and politics play a far greater part of the oppression we see in modern society. Where once we would have had preists and vicars telling us to live an an impoverished life in hope of a better afterlife, now we have bankers giving out unaffordable loans and the media telling us we need them in the hope of having a better life now.
Are there some fucked up religions out there? Of course there are. But there are also fucked up people who aren't religious. Humans are always susceptible to corruption with power and religion can be a very powerful thing. But so can so many things in life. Take the banks for instance, they completely fucked up the worlds economy because they had far too much power and were greedy. The difference between religion and banks is that religion has caused good in the world despite your protests to the contrary.

The difference between religion and banks is that religion has caused good in the world despite your protests to the contrary. The half arsed comments are from ppl who clearly don't know the first thing about the topic or are from people I've already deemed unintelligent through previous correspondence with them so I'm not bothered about them in the slightest. I agree with most of what you say, and they're all things I've discussed before (not necessarily on this forum) - my disdain for certain parts of modern media, social media and our political system is apparent to anyone who knows me, and of course you're correct when you say there are plenty of corrupt non-religious ppl knocking about, but religion gives them something to hide behind, to justify their actions, rather than the clarity you can get from someone who is corrupt/a cunt just for the sake of being one of chasing money at the expense of others (or whatever other reason, not gonna make a list). Just because there are worse things out there doesn't means religion gets a free pass. And I'm certain it has done more bad than good.

you can hide hatred behind many things though, not just religion - political views, social views. if someone wants to be hateful, then they will interpret their beliefs hatefully. your hinduism, your islam, your christianity, your atheism will be actively hateful because you want to hate, consciously or not. there is fucked up things that happen in the name of religion, but i think this usually is more due to people in power throughout history exploiting the natural fear of the unknown rather than anything else. i put it down to absolute power corrupts absolutely. fwiw most of the nicest most tolerant people i know draw power and solace from their religious beliefs, frankly i believe anything that lets you get through life and be as happy and good as possible is a good thing
i don't know what i believe. i believe in something, but not necessarily something being in control - just that the universe and each individual conciousness and all the complicated miracles within both has gotta mean something

There simply is no definitive answer. It's impossible, it's the ultimate unsolvable riddle, you can continue going back and back and back and there will always be more questions. Religion doesn't have the answers, science doesn't have the answers, and if people far, far more intelligent than I haven't got the foggiest then why should I waste time worrying about it?

Personally I'm agnostic, since there is no definitive proof either way of the existence of a (or multiple) diety.

so, how did we all come about then Cashis? how do you explain our being here? Is the correct answer "one of the millions of deities fabricated by any number of different cultures appeared and created it"? In all honesty I'm not sure, I've read multiple scientific theories all of which are above me but they still make more sense than the lazy God creationist theory. I can't explain it, but that's ok, I'm comfortable with that rather than living in fear of a supposed omnipotent constantly-judging bloke in the sky. This is an interesting read, though again I haven't the foggiest if it's accurate or not; www.quora.com/How-do-atheists-explain-the-Earths-formationHere's a post I enjoyed when embroiled in a similar debate on another forum. Even if you don't think it answers your question directly, it's still a good read;
