From reading about the Class of '92 it got me thinking about how underrated Nicky Butt was as a footballer. Completely a forgotten man in football really, he was one of the first of that generation to establish himself and in his first few seasons he had serious potential, many predicted he would be as good as Scholes, Giggs etc. So much so that he was on 97/98 PFA Team of the Year. He played in 47 games overall in the Treble season, with that famous four always mentioned regarding that season, his contributions are underappreciated.
Then internationally for England at the 2002 World Cup, I remember watching Argentina-England game on ESPN Classic when it was still going there a while back and the Scholes-Butt midfield was possibly the most balanced and solid that I ever remember seeing and Pele said that he was the best player in the England squad. Struck me how different England looked with a solid anchor man. No coincidence that was England's best showing in a long time.
Any other players you can think of of a similar mould?

Steve Finnan.
I didn't even remember he was playing half the time, never put a foot wrong when he got on the ball/challenged.

Tim Howard, Leon Britton, Steven Pienaar, Di Natale, Borja Valero, Ever Banega and Dario Srna are a few that spring to mind. Near enough all those players are pivotal for the clubs they play for but rarely get any recognition. Up until recent years (probably since his move to Juventus) I would have even said Pirlo was underrated. Think it was the Euros last year when everyone really got to see what a genius that man is. Another player I've always considered underrated is Serginho, the Brazilian left back/winger known for his time at Milan. If it wasn't for Roberto Carlos being an absolute boss I think Serginho would have got the plaudits he deserved. His career highlight was probably when Milan dicked Inter 6-0 back in 2001, he got 3 assists. Him and Cafu in the same team >>>>>> Oh and there's Linvoy Primus too, of course.

Looking back I personally underrated loads of Liverpool players especially Hamman. I don't know why I never appreciated him again suppose its because he wasnt flashy and wasn't attacking but he did an important job well and is often credited with being the main reason we won the CL in 05. I realise I might be alone in taking Didi for granted so hopefully this still counts.

Steve Finnan was the best right back in the league for a couple of seasons for us. After his car incident he never picked it back up.
Even though he was a calamity, Igor Biscan in the Champions League run was phenomenal. He'd go on 30 yard dribbles and play class through balls at the end.
There's the obvious with Lucas but ironically as his performances have dropped people have begun to recognise him more, which is the way it goes I suppose.
Kieran Gibbs as well. Does such a good job that often you don't see him. I always think the best full backs are the ones who you don't notice because opposing teams won't play the ball on their side, knowing they're hard to beat and their marking is so good.
Is Zabaleta still underrated? Thinking only in current day here, so many players have gone unrecognised in the past.

Javier Zanetti is absolute class. Right back, left back, centre mid. Anywhere. I know people will rate him, but never thought he gets the credit he deserves. Especially when you compare him to someone like Ryan Giggs.

We (Ireland) have had number of full-backs like that down the years, Carr was very good too, so was Irwin. Latest is Coleman, who is another excellent full-back.

Christian Ziege is probably the best left back we've had at Spurs since I've been going, another top drawer played completely ruined by a lack of knees.
Dejan Stankovic. Such a class player, and played so many vital games for Inter over the years. Can't ever really remember a time when I'd read that there was a top English club pursuing him either which is a shame because I would have loved to see him over here.

Srna is definitely one for me, in the same vein as Zanetti's underrating. Never plays a bad game and has excelled in his position for years and years. Full back is always a position where people just assumed there's no decent footballers in the world playing.

Always thought Robert Huth was a hell of a lot better than he got given credit for. He's not Maldini but unfairly thrown in with 'big, slow, limited bruiser' because he played for Stoke. I'd put him up there as one of the most consistent defenders in the Premier League outside the top 7 teams in the last 10 years.

James Milner just had a hand in all three goals to beat Bayern Munich at the Allianz arena.
